I wish someone in the United States thats reliable would come out and make a statement regarding ,if the worst happens in Japan, how would we be effected in the US. How long would it take to blow here,etc.. This BS that we have nobody in charge. The Surgeon General is a joke. I don't want the local meterologist telling me,i want some in the know high ranking scientist. Are we panicing for not reason. Just a straight answer is what we deserve!!

Who was talking about the liquid iodine, was that you Trident? A lil dab'll do ya? Wellll... I have some povidone-iodine solution 7.5% at home (don't ask how cause I'll sound like Billie Jean Dunn). It contains 0.75% iodine. Is that what people are dabbin'? You know, just in case... I can't give my girls margaritas. lol

Here is the link to Teh's find-- it was me who said little dab'll do ya. I bought 10% solution, the amount suggested is 1 tsp. of 2%... there are suggested amts. for children too.

Unstable Japanese reactors unsettle San Diego
Radioactive air pollution a top concern despite official assurances

Excerpt:
A dearth of state and federal data about the possibility of a nuclear dusting on the West Coast has residents from San Diego to Idaho scrambling for answers and antidotes as the situation at Japan’s nuclear plants teeters between bad and worse.

Health officials on Wednesday minimized the potential for health effects here but the memory of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 continues to haunt the public imagination as weather experts said prevailing winds move from Asia to the U.S. West Coast in seven to ten days.

There's a new word for ya to use in a sentence, Quiche - "dearth".

Yesterday's word of the day was "paucity".

Today's word is "dearth".

I'm getting ready to go to the store to buy a bottle of Betadine - but I'm afraid I'll find out there's a dearth of stock.

IF there's not a dearth, there's a paucity...

Back after my commute home.

I promised Monday night to share any info we got at work. We've gotten nothing since Monday. IMO, this is because, as we all here see, the Japanese were not being honest about the situation.

It is my opinion that the "50" either perished or are currently in hospitals with severe radiation poisoning. They are heroes!

Again, IMO, the evacuation zone was way too small and the warning people to stay indoors was basically saying "You're contaminated. We don't want you among the population. Please stay put until you succumb."

Very harsh, I know, but the conflicting information and the info gleaned today and Japan basically begging other countries to stick with their Japanese story (my words), they found their honor to be more important than the safety of their people.

Can we get a good source that explains how Potassium iodide and tincture of iodine are used to protect the thyroid from cancer, how much radiation exposure is required before this method is used and when the human body is exposed to those levels of radiation what are the consequences for all other organs in the human body besides the thyroid?

I think that's really important to understand. I don't know the answers.

Because, if we get enough radiation exposure to require dosages then it is also important to understand that you may be able to save your thyroid from becoming cancerous but you will have other organs that will have had the same level of exposure and those will be impacted as well and as much more than likely.

KWIM?

I think basically you can save your thyroid but what about the rest of your body? What about your/children's reproductive organs? Just a thought....

2231: John Luke from Nerimaku, Tokyo writes: "Remember, many people are wearing masks now because it's 'hay-fever season' NOT because they are worried about radiation. Your report gives the impression people are wearing masks because of fear. Please correct this.

Kat the link about the iodine has other info about what to do and how to protect yourself. I don't think there is anything else you can "take" to combat the rest of the things. You just have to protect yourself from high levels. But again, we don't know what levels might or might NOT come this way............

Feds deploy more radiation monitors in western US

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- More radiation monitors are being deployed in the western United States and Pacific territories, as officials seek to mollify public concern over exposure from damaged nuclear plants in Japan, federal environmental regulators said.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency already monitors radiation throughout the area as part of its RadNet system, which measures levels in air, drinking water, milk and rain.

Just to "mollify" us you understand, I don't feel mollified.

From what I have read and talking with that pharmacist yesterday, these iodide pills won't do much. Yes, they will help your thyroid. But they do much better for children because their thyroids are still growing. The rest of your body and the amount of exposure is still going to be there and these pills won't do squat for that.

I think people are putting too much "faith" into these pills. It isn't going to matter if you are exposure to high levels for any length of time.

What worries me is the food chain. Even if this "cloud" doesn't get to our west coast - some of it will be absorbed into the clouds and then released by the water cycle. This will put it into the ground which our veggies and fruit are grown, which the cows, chickens and such eat and then, we, in turn eat them. That's what is bothering me.
