Major Quake Hits Fukushima, Japan, Site of 2011 Tsunami and Meltdown

by Alex Johnson

A strong earthquake hit Tuesday morning off the east coast of Japan near Fukushima, the site of the 2011 earthquake-spawned tsunami that killed almost 19,000 people, Japanese and U.S. agencies said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency put the earthquake at magnitude 7.3 and issued a tsunami warning for Fukushima Prefecture and urged immediate evacuations. It said tsunamis were expected to arrive "imminently" in the region...

I have a dear friend who is a reporter who has reported extensively on the Fukushima power plant disaster. He and I have been in contact all day and he's so worried for the residents of the area at the moment. With his permission, I will update with anything he knows. Praying.

I did a double-take when I saw this link, thinking at first it was from a few years ago. But, I looked at the date and was like, "oh, no! not again!" I hope everyone's better prepared this time and all stay safe!

The Japan Meteorological Agency has said that Tuesday’s earthquake was an aftershock of the enormous, magnitude 9 quake in 2011, which killed more than 15,000 people and sent the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into meltdown.

Pointing out that Tuesday’s quake was an aftershock of the 2011 earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency also warned that another large quake could be expected within the next few days.People in Japan have been warned to “remain cautious” for the next week.
The magnitude 7.4 quake was the largest earthquake in the region since the magnitude 9 quake in 2011 and some of its immediate aftershocks.

Scary info and forecast.

I'm confused - how can it be an "aftershock" 5 years later?? [emoji848]

You're not the only one. I was scratching my head when I posted the link.

Now this:

The Japan Meteorological Agency described it as an aftershock of the 2011 quake, which triggered a tsunami that killed about 18,000 people and wiped out entire neighbourhoods.
"Aftershocks could continue not only for five years but as long as 100 years," Yasuhiro Umeda, a Kyoto University seismologist, said on Japanese broadcaster NTV.
