⚠️We are renewing our appeal for information to help find missing Jenny Hall who has not been heard from since leaving her home in Tow Law just after 3pm on Tuesday (February 18).

Officers located Jenny’s red Ford Focus which had been found parked on the B6278, between Eggleston and Stanhope yesterday.

An extensive search is taking place in the area, using specially-trained police teams and expert mountain rescue search teams, backed with air support, including HM Coastguard.

Jenny is a keen long-distance runner and police are additionally carrying out a wider search in the Teesdale area.

Police are also grateful for assistance from the Rurali community group, who are assisting in the search for the 23-year-old.

We would like to thank the public for their continuing support in the search. Anyone who believes they may have seen Jenny or has any relevant information about her whereabouts is asked to contact police immediately on 999.

Jenny is described as white, 6ft tall and has very long dark hair. She was last seen wearing a blue hoodie with a John Deere logo and dark jogging bottoms.

A dedicated Family Liaison Officer is also working with Jenny’s family.

This is a tangential observation, but I wonder how old this photo is? Her hair is described as “very long,” which would mean years of growth after this photo was taken? Not that it matters, as her face is clear and she is 6 feet tall, so her hair length would obviously not prevent identification, in my opinion. Just wondering who described her.

The B6278 looks to be a long, winding country lane over some hills with surrounding country side. It's a 10 mile stretch between the two mentioned villages. Looks very much like hiking country, with forests, farms, a bike park and waterfall nearby. Despite the waterfall marker on the map there doesn't look to be any significant river or body of water around.
There is the river tees to the south west, some miles away.

Given she's a runner and was last seen wearing jogging pants maybe she went out for a run in the nice countryside, although the time, leaving her home late afternoon (AFTER 3pm) it's not a huge amount of time to drive to the location and get a long run in before it's getting dark, although it has been getting to 5:30pm before sunset so maybe not that late.

However, if that was the case, it does look like an area where, if she may have gone some way off the beaten track and fallen and badly hurt herself, she could easily end up stranded without people coming across her location on their hikes/dog walks.

Hopefully it's a better outcome than that.

My thoughts:

The missing report says her car was parked along the road.

What, just left on the road? Not in a parking area or lay-by?

Was the car locked or not?

Is there any possibility it could've broken down?

On the new article on the BBC website the photo shows the police and a search and rescue van in the area. There are plentiful skitterings of snow on the ground.

It also looks like desolate moorland with nothing around for miles.

It doesn't seem a safe place for a lone woman to go for a run there. Or even a lone man. Anyone.

It could be a known area for well trained cross-country runners or fell runners in the summer, but surely not in February when there is snow/ice on the ground?!

She left her home in Tow Law at 15.00hrs. Her car was found between Stanhope and Egginstone, and Stanhope (the closest of the two ) is a 17 minute drive. So, it took her approximately 20 minutes to drive to where her car was found.
Sunset is at 17.20hrs.
So that have her a maximum of 2 hours before it got dark.

It sounds like going for a run (if that's what she was doing) may have a last minute rushed idea, and she may not have had a torch, a red LED flashing light to attach to her clothing, nor a hi-vis vest on her.

Bu then just because she was a runner, it doesn't mean that's what she was doing when she went missing.

Hmmm.

did she have a phone?
is there phone service there?
what has been the over night temperature?
are there trails off the road?

She is on the moors. Desolate, never ending moorland.

Given the wording says parked, rather than left indicates it was actually parked out of the way.
But this is a small, 2 lane country road and there actually very few places on the south section of this road where it's viable to be "parked" off the road.
Somewhere like this where it's a small layby. There's only a few small layby I can see I think on the map from a quick scan of the road.
However further north towards Stanhope there's seemingly a section where cars do park up, looks more like a potential hiking spot up that way and it's near to Tow Law.

*UPDATE* Just noticed the BBC article posted above which says the search is now focused on Hamsterley Forest which looks to be a good several kilometers away (east) from the road her car was parked on. Possibly they have learned of a particular regular running route she takes.

Also thought the same when reading the news appeal 'very long black hair' was the description. 😒

Really hope they find her soon. I wonder if her phone has been located, car keys etc.

Do people take their car to go a run, possibly. Especially if the route is one she enjoys and not close to home.

I drive to different routes to run all the time. It sounds like she did distance running, so in my experience, this would be very normal, like driving to the trailhead of a hike. New scenery.

Her family have now confirmed she may have also been carrying a green jacket and had her hair in a ponytail

Ch Insp Haythornthwaite said police had "become increasingly concerned" for Ms Hall and were "exploring all lines of enquiry, including dozens from members of the public".
