CANADA Jeremy Skibicki charged with four murders of Indigenous women

I don't know how sentencing works, but because of the finding by the judge there is a mandatory life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years. And let's face it, a serial killer isn't likely to get parole.

The emotions of all of the victims' families and all in the community were raw.

On Thursday, songs of honour and healing could be heard throughout downtown as family members and friends marched to Portage and Main and held a round dance celebrating the verdict.

“A little bit of mixed emotions – a sense of relief, gratitude, but ultimately hopefully it brings closure,” said Jeremy Contois.

Cambria Harris, the daughter of Morgan Harris, spoke during a news conference at the Assembly of First Nations conference in Montreal.

“Today we found out the man that took my mom’s life and the three other women was found guilty on all four counts of first-degree murder and criminally responsible,” she said. “He knew exactly what he was doing at the time when he committed those acts… He preyed on these women at shelters, he took them home, and he took their life and disposed of them in a landfill.”
Relief and closure for victims' families in wake of Winnipeg serial killer's conviction

Now we wait for the landfill to be searched more thoroughly. The victims' loved ones deserve nothing less. It may be a longshot, but this has been torture for these families and who knows if there are other unknown victims.

For those not from Canada, or who haven't followed this case, the fairly recently elected premier of Manitoba (equivalent to a state governor) is indigenous and likely won the election because of this case and because of all of the unsolved murders/disappearances of indigenous women. (And, he seems to be an amazing, eloquent, smart person who might have been elected even if these murders didn't happen. I'm wondering if he might be a candidate for Prime Minister of Canada sometime in the future, but I definitely have to get to know him better. He's very impressive. His name is Wab Kinew.)

Families and supporters of four murdered women celebrate outside the Manitoba Law Courts after the guilty verdict of serial killer Jeremy Skibicki is read in a courtroom in Winnipeg on Thursday, July 11, 2024. Skibicki plead guilty, but not criminally responsible due to mental illness, to the murders of Marcedes Myran, 26, Morgan Harris, 39, and Rebecca Contois, 24 and a fourth, unidentified woman. A judge determined Skibicki is guilty of killing all four women

'Families and supporters of four Indigenous women who died at the hands of a serial killer are expected to address the man for the first time today in a Winnipeg courtroom.

A judge convicted Jeremy Skibicki last month of first-degree murder in the 2022 slayings, which put another spotlight on the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada.

A first-degree murder conviction carries an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.'

''The search of a Manitoba landfill for the remains of two First Nations women slain by a serial killer is scheduled to start on Dec. 2, APTN News has learned.

Relatives of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran confirmed the early December date Thursday.

“I’m anxious and I’m scared,” said Donna Bartlett, grandmother of Myran, 26. “Scared that we won’t find her and scared that we will.”

Roughly 140 people applied to work 10-hour shifts Monday to Thursday and part-time Fridays and Saturdays, said Robinson, noting the new hires will begin their training soon.''

Federal police and the province's chief medical examiner are now investigating and seeking to identify the remains as those of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran.

Couldn't this also be Buffalo Woman, potentially? I thought there were three women being sought.

MOO

The case was seen by many in Canada as a symbol of the dangers faced by Indigenous women in a country where they disproportionately fall victim to violence, termed a "genocide" by a national public inquiry in 2019.

Indigenous women represent about one-fifth of all women killed in gender-related homicides in the country -- despite comprising just five percent of the female population

So this sicko was a “house cleaner” type of killer. Ugh. Those are some of the worst imaginable.

I am amazed they found any remains after all this time, hopefully it's one of the ladies they are looking for and not someone else there's so many missing in wpg. My 2 oldest took part with friends at the protests outside of the dump to search it, I honestly thought they wouldn't find anything after all this time ,I'm glad I was proven wrong.

AMC Stands in Solidarity with Families Following Discovery at Prairie Green Landfill.
Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg – Today, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs’ (AMC) Grand Chief Kyra Wilson shares the following statement:

“Today, we stand with heavy hearts, with determination, and with an unbreakable commitment to justice. The discovery of human remains at the Prairie Green Landfill is a painful but significant moment in our collective fight for justice. The efforts to bring home Marcedes Myran, Morgan Harris, and Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe have been relentless—led by their families, First Nations leadership, and with support from our provincial and federal governments

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew announced Wednesday that possible remains had been found and identification efforts were underway.

Melissa Robinson, a cousin of Harris, says today is a heavy and very emotional day.

'Do better,' says daughter of Morgan Harris to those who refused landfill search

Elle Harris is the daughter of Morgan Harris, who was slain by a serial killer and is believed to be among remains found in a Manitoba landfill.

Elle Harris thanked the late Cathy Merrick, former grand chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, for pressing the search forward — and called out those who resisted the effort to search

Elle Harris thought she might be ready when the news came, but when it did her heart fell and all she could think was "I want my mom." :(:(

There's also Tanya nepinak missing presumed to be in the landfill to.

Outside the Brady Road Landfill in Winnipeg.
The discovery of potential human remains at the Prairie Green Landfill has re-opened wounds for other people looking for closure or answers, like the family of Tanya Nepinak who have been pushing for a search to find her for over 10 years after she went missing.

“This gives me hope that the Brady Landfill will be searched,” Sue Caribou, Tanya Nepinak’s aunt.

“There’s remains at the Brady Landfill of my niece. And they did six days for her, and they didn’t go back to search, and they haven’t searched for my niece ever since then.
