Biden diagnosed with ‘aggressive form’ of prostate cancer

CNN

Former President Joe Biden was diagnosed with an “aggressive form” of prostate cancer, according to a statement from his personal office Sunday, and it has spread to his bones.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” the statement said.

It continued, “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management

I wonder if Mr. Biden was still getting annual PSA testing despite his age. I would think yes ... at least until he was out of politics. This way the cancer could have been diagnosed at an earlier stage.

"Although it’s possible for men to develop prostate cancer at any age, “the older we get, the higher the likelihood is that we have prostate cancer,” says Amir Lebastchi, MD, a urologic oncologist with USC Urology, part of Keck Medicine of USC, who specializes in diagnosing and treating prostate cancer.

The national prostate cancer screening guidelines recommend against screening for prostate cancer after the age of 69, despite the increased risk of prostate cancer that comes with age. But as Dr. Lebastchi emphasizes, deciding to continue screening is “an individual decision for each patient.”

He's 82, he should've been screened pretty regularly, no? In my country the screening starts at 50. He is dealing with something really aggressive and it's already affecting the bones, so I'm guessing he was probably not getting screened.

Older men are often deliberately
not treated for a diagnosis of routine, non-agressive prostate cancer. IMO that is what was happening with Biden but now a "new nodule" has appeared.

In elderly patients, treatments for prostrate cancer are considered to do much more harm than good: "Most patients have slow-growing, localized tumors, confined to the prostate gland, that are unlikely to threaten their lives."

He actually got checked out because he was symptomatic, and this is what they found. A Gleason score of 9 is about as bad as it gets; the score could theoretically go above 10 but that's the highest they scale it.

I wish only the best for him and his family in the days to come. I have a feeling that palliative or even comfort care will be the best route taken, although I said that about Jimmy Carter when he had his melanoma diagnosis and he lived almost a decade longer.

A surprisingly large percentage of prostate cancer patients have PSA's in the normal range at the time of diagnosis.

I would certainly not assume he was not being screened.

I wouldn't know, I didn't follow much of the election, I'm not a U.S. citizen. Either way, I can't believe he was being screened properly, which probably makes sense considering how busy his life must have been in the last 10 years... unfortunately many people think "no symptoms, no reason to check". My father had gastrointestinal cancer, only got it checked out when he got symptoms. My best friend's father had prostate cancer that was found on a routine screening, it spread everywhere. Both passed away before even reaching 60-years-old.

I'm sure Biden will have access to the best care available (don't get me wrong, so did my father, can't complain about that at all), but sometimes life is just the way it is. I hope he has a strong support system around him, this diagnose rocks the patient and the family.
Thank you for your sensitive and caring response and comment. I am sorry you and your family and friend went through this.

BM meaning bone metastasis

The median survival of patients with BM from the lung, breast, and prostate was 6, 14, and 24 months, respectively (P-value 0.001). Only 22% of patients with extraskeletal metastasis in addition to BM survived more than 6 months (P-value 0.013).

It mentions hip pain and it's possible that any discomfort/pain Biden may have been experiencing was just chalked up to his spinal arthritis?
It wouldn't be surprising if he was getting steroid shots for spine/joint pain and if he was it could have masked pain from bone cancer?

imo

Biden's last medical ck as POTUS and released to the public.

'Biden’s doctor says there are no new concerns with the president’s health and he remains fit to serve'

snip:

"Previous exams noted Biden had a stiffened gait caused by “wear and tear” on his spine. The exam on Wednesday noted Biden’s “arthritic changes remain moderate to severe, but still do not result in nerve root compression significant enough that they would warrant any specific treatment.”

Biden recently complained of some left hip soreness, the memo said, “which is most certainly also contributing to his stiffened gait.” While Biden’s gait remains stiff, it has not worsened from last year, the memo said.'

It’s amazing how many people on some other online sites are suddenly cancer specialists. A lot of posts saying that Biden must have known about this when he was in office and it was covered up. Ridiculous. As has been stated previously on this thread, a man can have low PSA numbers and still have this happen.

This is a very treatable cancer and I hope President Biden has many more years of life.

My stepdad was given hormones when his prostate cancer returned at age 90 (even though his prostate had been removed, the cancer cells reappeared), and that was a successful treatment for him. I will say that for a time he really was an emotional wreck, however. Men aren’t used to the side effects of having female hormones in their own bodies! He lived to be 97. I hope President Biden fares as well.
