WASHINGTON, April 11 (Reuters) - The latest chapter in Hollywood star Johnny Depp's legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard kicked off on Monday as a U.S. defamation trial began over allegations Heard made about domestic abuse.

Depp, 58, has sued Heard for $50 million, saying she defamed him when she penned a 2018 opinion piece in the Washington Post about being a survivor of domestic abuse.

The op-ed never mentioned Depp by name, but Depp's lawyers have said it was clear Heard was referencing him, and that the piece damaged his film career and reputation.

Depp has denied all allegations of abuse, saying in his lawsuit that Heard's claims were an "elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity for Ms. Heard and advance her career."

Juror selection is expected to begin Monday in the case.

Depp and Heard both submitted long lists of potential witnesses they could put on the stand.

Heard’s list includes her ex-boyfriend and Tesla (TSLA.O) Chief Executive Elon Musk, who she texted with about Depp. Also on the list of potential witnesses is actor James Franco, who Heard testified in the London case inquired about bruises on her face following an alleged abusive incident with Depp.

Depp wants the Fairfax County jury to find that Heard knowingly made false claims.

Opening statements are happening now.

This should be interesting. IMO, smart move to have the female attorney for JD address Heard’s accusations on violent acts.

I will say, it’s hard to read these two as both are actors.

She looks smug .
I predict she will cry on point.
She RUINED his career.
That’s the friggin river that runs through this.
At the very least, her jealous, lying , self serving mean actions will be exposed.

Wow. Attorney Rottenborn’s opening statement is truth in advertising, lol.

‘this editorial is absolutely about Johnny Depp… oh no, wait, it isn’t… if it is, Amber can’t help it…’ Seems like he wants it to be about Johnny when it will damn him, and not about Johnny when it will damn Amber to have it be so.

AH’s woman attorney who is doing this dramatic opening…she’s like a gossiping KAREN ! I think she drank a couple of red bulls before she got up there.
The jury must be exhausted,lol.

she’s fake crying so far with some gulping and facial-muscle-kiting.

No actual tears, though.

Do you get the feeling that the defense is planning to relitigate all their London evidence on the jurors’ promise they have no preconceived knowledge as to it?

I mean, I don’t think he’s a perfect person - I’m sure he was jealous and there were things he would prefer she didn’t do, and there are indeed such things as alcoholic blackouts - but these particular stories are SO elaborate and unlikely… ‘face down in his dirty carpet’, lol… I guess the housekeeper they admit he has isn’t very good…

Does anyone have a link to watch the trial?

I’ll be especially interested in your opinion of the medical testimony.

Especially squared, because I’m fascinated at the defense’s repeated and enduring contention that a ‘concierge doctor’ et al is a biased slave (lol).

I mean, I can’t afford one, but I know what one is, and AFAIK it usually involves them being part of a service with several other medical professionals; and there’s the whole Hippocratic Oath thing and all… I find it hard to believe they consider themselves to be owned by JD.

I hope I can add something to the discussion. :)
I may be doing something wrong though. Is there a way to watch without a paid subscription?

If you get CourtTV on your cable, they are showing it on broadcast.

I read somewhere that they are the pool feed for this.

I've been watching opening statements by prosecution (Depp) and defense (Heard).
Depp does not look good.

Defense attorney (representing Heard) said this will be a five to six week trial.

I'll be watching this trial for its duration. Anyone else here?
