JMO Jim Bob & Michelle were in a hurry to get Josh married off. They thought he needed a wife to sate his sexual appetite. I remember getting this eerie vibe while watching Josh & Anna's relationship on the show. It was very hurried to say the least. Again, JMO.

Exactly Disguiseduser. I remember telling my DH that their marrying him off fast and for a reason. I knew about his sexual misdeeds the same year they got their show, I also told him their going to have problems with him. I was hoping I was wrong. I pray he's the only nutcase but they have what, 18 more.

If you hide things from your children and make a big deal out of even the smallest thing, that child will want to know who, what, when, how and why. I say this because I've been their with my parents.

They hid the booze from my sis and me. It was locked in a hidden cabinet in the basement. The basement which was my fathers poker room/men's hangout.
I got to the booze when I was 13 & because it was locked and hid from me, I became an expert lock picker. To this day there hasn't been a lock I could not open.
You cannot raise your children in a bubble and not expect consequences.

I am so glad clown car is done, I bet that uterus of hers jumped ship and sailed far, far away and is in retirement. I bet Ripley would love to have it in his BeLIEve It Or Not museum.

IMHO, and from recollections from watching the series, it took a great deal of family prayer and discussion before Josh ever too that job in DC. Now, I have a pretty good idea of why.

I have a feeling these children, especially the girls, are expected to never leave the "nest" of their religion and beliefs. I see them metaphorically walking around with cocoons surrounding them with protection from the real world. Hmmm... let's see over the years how that works.

Over the years? Well... let's see... it didn't protect them in their own damn household.

I think you mean FLDS and not LDS. Two separate religions (well, LDS is a religion and FLDS a cult). No polygamy or lost boys in LDS.

Shouldn't everyone learn how to have self control no matter what the circumstance?

Regardless of how much you may try to shelter your children, when they grow up and leave the nest, should they not be educated on different aspects that they are going to face in the world around them?

How will they survive in society if they are not prepared?

If you teach you child that normal instincts are so forbidden and sinful, will they not want to let loose once they are free from the nest?

I don't want to bore you with retelling but some may have missed it. I have many family members with ' similar' religious ideas. One of my cousins recently left home for college and met a girl with herpes and did not know what it was. How is a college aged boy in America, who does not know what herpes is, prepared for life? Thankfully the girl was honest with him so he didn't contract it but that's how easily it could have happened. This boy knows every verse in the Bible and has won many scripture quoting competitions but has never heard the word herpes until age 19.

Many of them openly reject the notion of government support--although they don't seem to mind "cyberbegging." See the Stanley Family (Arkansas) thread for an example of quivering folks who DON'T have a reality TV show to support themselves.

I was a fairly avid watcher (cringe) I do know the Parents owned and rented out commercial property. The home Jill and Hubby live in was also a property the Parents owned. So who knows exactly how much they have in real estate that generates income. Or other sources I may have missed.

Jim Bob and his parents were in real estate, which has generated income from rentals and buying foreclosures and then selling for a profit. JB also has a cell tower on a piece of his property, which generates a nice chunk from what I've read elsewhere. Since the show, they have income from TV, books, and People magazine.

Josh "owned" a used car lot before moved to DC. I think JB really owned it all along but on the show it was made to appear Josh did.

John David has a towing business and a pilot's license.

Jana, Jill, Jessa and Jinger are simply uteruses waiting to be filled, so they have no jobs. Jana actually mothers the majority of the children since Michelle seems to think her obligation ends when the baby isn't breastfeeding any more.


Jill's husband Derek worked for Wal-Mart - he actually has a college degree - but quit a few months ago to pursue being a missionary (i. e. soliciting donations and flying back and forth to a foreign country several times).

Jessa's husband Ben "works" for Jim Bob, doing ??? No one knows for sure.

Joseph and Josiah are both over 18 but I don't know if they work. Josiah was shipped off to the ALERT! academy for a year or two...I strongly suspect he has homosexual tendencies and that's the Quiverful way of de-programming the gay. Shortly thereafter he was announced to be in a courtship with what seemed to be a reasonably intelligent 17 year old - who proved her intelligence by ending the courtship after the molestation was revealed.

I so appreciate your summation. I admit to never having watched the show. But I do read up and am a frequent lurker at freejinger.

I have a morbid fascination with these people and I am kind of embarrassed by that, only not enough to stop being fascinated.

Pass the Cheetos, please.
