An emergency hearing was held in Palatka on Thursday over who should get custody of Ronald Cummings Jr. after his father was arrested on drug charges.

Crystal Sheffield, whose daughter Haleigh Cummings has been missing since February, was awarded custody of her son.

Sheffield was to pick up her son Friday afternoon.

This is some of the best news yet! Thank goodness Butterbean is at home with his family, and out of that tension filled and dangerous environment.

Plus, I bet he just adores playing with his little sis! :)

oops... :D

Thank God, JR is finally where he belongs ! I would pay to see Ron's facial expression when he gets word of this !

I bet for a half a million dollars, Ron would accommodate you for that look on his face. He needs bail money.

Sleep well tonight little Butterbean. You are home at last.

anyone know if this is temporary custody?

From the experiences I've had and learned about from my days on a step-mom forum, this would be temporary custody. However, the chances of not getting permanent custody at a regular hearing are pretty slim. :)

Just checking in today and I know that the exchange was supposed to be made this afternoon. Has anyone heard whether or not Crystal actually has Butterbean yet? I ask that.. and I would love to be able to "keep up" with him, but I also hope that the media leaves them alone..I imagine Jr. has had a day of mixed emotions, he is so young and this little fella probably doesn't know what to think. When I think about what he's been through in the last year, I just want to cry..I really do.

It must be a very bittersweet day for Crystal as well..finally having Jr living with her yet no HaLeigh..I pray for strength for Crystal. My hope is that she has dealt with any demons that may have been nipping at her heels and understands that she has been given a second chance..at least with Butterbean and he needs a lucid, plugged in mommy now more than ever. Not only does he need that ..he deserves that and he shouldn't have to settle for anything less.

If you ever read here Crystal, I have faith in you girl! You can do this!
None of us are perfect and if we claim to be we're lying. But blowing this chance you been given is not an option...even on the toughest days you have to be strong! You know people will be watching and just waiting for to to fail..you just can't let that happen. Butterbean needs you too much ..

chesterp or anybody, do you know if he was attending pre-K this year? Just wondering.

He went for a little while but I believe RC hasn't been taking him to school.

And to just think, so self-righteous was RC and so "overwhelming his concern" re the mere possibility their children might be exposed to drugs around their mother that he convinced a judge to let Haleigh and Junior "stay safe"... w HIM.

Then even NG gave CS, the innocent victim, a load of grief for suggesting MC might possibly be involved w drugs... Looks like CS's concerns were well founded afterall.

Pondering - Just beautiful...absolutely beautiful. I echo your prayers and extend to Crystal my heartfelt wishes for good health, good friends, wisdom and courage to make the right decisions for herself and, especially, for little Jr.

May God hold all of you in the palm of his hand and bring precious Haleigh home to you soon.

I'm so happy to hear this news. I have a lot of faith that Crystal will be a wonderful mother and role model to Ron Jr. I believe deep in my heart losing Haleigh has given Crystal a new perspective on what's important in this world. She will cherish this little fella the way a mother and parent should. Bless all of them as they embark on a new life... TOGETHER.

To the little one we know as Butterbean: May you finally find peace and steadfast love in the arms and home of your Mother. You have many people who care and want the very best for you. Wishing you a wonderful life full of joy, happiness and all the chocolate chip cookies a kid could ever want.

I hope this link works - from PDN - so sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't

http://www.palatkadailynews.com/articles/2010/01/23/news/news01.txt

"He's already gone," Annette Sykes, paternal grandmother of Haleigh, said Friday afternoon. "It's really hard with his daddy gone to let him go. He has been with us all of his life." The state Department of Children and Family Services confirmed Friday that Junior was taken into the custody of his mother, Crystal Sheffield, as decided by the judge.

Sykes declined to comment as to whether she knew the drug trafficking was taking place.

"Right now we are just basically numb," Sykes said.

Thanks for the link, Charlie. I pray that Crystal has held to her promise to put her life on track, and that with the support of her family will provide Jr with all the love and proper care that he so needs and deserves. God bless the little guy.

Has anyone heard how the custody hearing went, as far as A Sykes goes? There is rumor that Sykes attacked, or tried to attack Crystal. If I'm wrong in posting this, please do not ban me. I'll delete this. I'd heard there was a rumor thread here some place, but I can't find it.

I apologize now, in advance, if what I'm asking isn't proper.
