That is so sick that I don't even know what to say. Was he getting excited because of what he was hearing in the trials (one was about a murdered baby) or because he was sitting on the bench and playing judge?

He was probably like most other criminals who have wantonly commited crimes. He felt it was OK because he was inclined to do it and that only other people do things that are criminally wrong.
