04/15/2019 22 ORDER granting Defendant's Unopposed 21 Motion to Continue the Status Conference. Status Conference set for 4/16/2019 IS CONTINUED TO 5/21/2019 at 10:00 AM in Topeka Courtroom 401 (HLT) before District Judge Holly L. Teeter. Time excluded from 4/15/2019 until 5/21/2019 as to Eric Duane Newman (1). Signed by District Judge Holly L. Teeter on 4/15/2019. (md) Modified on 5/15/2019 (md). (Entered: 04/15/2019)

05/15/2019 27 MOTION to Continue Status Conference by Eric Duane Newman. (Bartee, Thomas) (Entered: 05/15/2019)
05/20/2019 28 ORDER granting 27 Motion to Continue the Status Conference. Defendant seeks a 60-day continuance of the May 21, 2019 status conference. Defendant explains that prior counsel recently announced his resignation from the FPD's Office and undersigned counsel needs additional time to review the discovery and meet with Mr. Newman. Defendant has been informed of his statutory right to a speedy trial, joins this request, and does not object to the tolling of his speedy-trial time. The government does not object to this continuance. The Courts finds under the ends of justice provision of the Speedy Trial Act that the ends of justice served by allowing Defendant time to accomplish these tasks outweighs the best interests of the public and Defendant in a trial beginning by the current speedy trial deadline. The Court continues the status conference until July 23, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. in Topeka Courtroom 401 (HLT) before District Judge Holly L. Teeter and excludes the period of time between today and July 23, 2019, as a period of excludable time under the Speedy Trial Act. Signed by District Judge Holly L. Teeter on 5/20/2019. (This is a TEXT ENTRY ONLY. There is no.pdf document associated with this entry.) (md) (Entered: 05/20/2019)

07/17/2019 30 Joint MOTION to Continue Status Conference by Eric Duane Newman. (Bartee, Thomas) (Entered: 07/17/2019)
07/19/2019 31 ORDER granting Joint 30 Motion for Continuance. The parties move to continue the status conference and set a pretrial motions schedule. The motion states proposed dates, and counsel explains that these dates are appropriate because: (1) this case involves novel issues of domestic and international law (the case involves an alleged homicide committed on the high seas aboard a foreign-flagged ship that was initially investigated by a foreign government), (2) the discovery is extensive, (3) a considerable amount of investigation remains to be done, and (4) this proposed schedule allows the government the necessary time to secure witnesses should the Court require a hearing (as most witnesses reside outside of the District of Kansas). Defendant has been informed of his statutory right to a speedy trial, joins this request, and does not object to the tolling of speedy trial time during the requested period. The Courts finds under the ends of justice provision of the Speedy Trial Act that the ends of justice served by extending the schedule and allowing the government and Defendant time to accomplish these tasks outweighs the best interests of the public and Defendant in a trial beginning by the current speedy trial deadline. The Court sets a pretrial motions deadline of September 13, 2019. The response deadline is September 27, 2019. The Court will hold an evidentiary hearing and oral argument on October 30, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. in Topeka Courtroom 401 (HLT) before District Judge Holly L. Teeter and a status conference on December 10, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. in Topeka Courtroom 401 (HLT) before District Judge Holly L. Teeter. New judge to oversee cruise ship death case against Topekan

Chief District Judge Julie A. Robinson was recently assigned to hear the ongoing federal case in which Topekan Eric D. Newman is charged with the second-degree murder of his girlfriend, who plunged to her death on a cruise ship.

U.S. District Judge Holly L. Teeter on Aug. 12 signed an order reassigning the case from Teeter to Robinson. The order didn't say why the case was reassigned.
[.....]
Robinson's appointment nullifies plans Teeter outlined last month in an order in which she granted a continuance requested jointly by attorneys for the prosecution and defense, and scheduled court proceedings that included a status conference to be held Dec. 10.
