  • Distinguishing CharacteristicsAsian female. Black hair, brown eyes. Karen has a white-colored circular mark on one of her legs. She was born in China and her native language is Chinese; her English was limited at the time of her disappearance.
Details of Disappearance
Karen was last seen playing outside of her family's home at Riverhills Apartments on Monroe Street in Grenada, Mississippi on May 21, 1994 at approximately 6:30 p.m. Karen's stepfather, Shindong He, was the last person to see her. He went outside to check on her at 11:00 p.m. and couldn't find her. At midnight, Karen's mother arrived home, and they called the police.

Two children who knew Karen reported seeing her get into a van with a tall Asian man on the day of her disappearance. An extensive search of the area produced no clues as to the child's whereabouts; she has never been heard from again.

Karen's mother, Wen Hua Zhou, was born in China and had been living in Mississippi for about two years prior to her daughter's disappearance, but she still spoke little English. She used "May" as her American name. Karen's biological father, Wen Hua's first husband, lived in China when Karen disappeared and hadn't had any contact with her for years, and was thus ruled out as a suspect in her disappearance.

Karen was a fifth-grade student at Lizzie Horn Elementary School in 1994. Her teachers stated she was a good student, although she was still learning English. However, they noted she frequently came to school with bruises.

Karen's stepfather refused to take a polygraph in her case, and he is considered the prime suspect in her disappearance. Her stepfather was later convicted of aggravated assault in Nashville, Tennessee; Wen Hua was the victim in that case, and during the incident, her husband told her he had killed Karen. He was subsequently deported back to China.

Karen's disappearance remains unsolved; investigators believe she was the victim of a homicide. It remains classified as a non-family abduction.

Found her on here. It says that she was cremated? Does anyone know if this is just standard practice when listing someone deceased on the website that you HAVE to put something? I just find it a bit odd, but maybe that's just me.

<<In October of 1994, investigators considered kidnapping suspect, Phillip Dean Fleming, as a possible suspect in Karen’s disappearance. On September 12th 1994, Fleming kidnapped eight year old Santana Renee Boyd from Bramlett Elementary School in Oxford, Mississippi. He released her at a McDonalds Restaurant in Jackson, Tennessee.

Fleming is also suspected of three attempted abductions in central Mississippi the day before Boyd was kidnapped. He was also wanted in Lexington, South Carolina for sexually assaulting a twelve year old girl on August 21st 1994. He was located in Florida in October of 1994 and was using an alias at the time. His identity was confirmed though fingerprints after he was arrested for auto theft.

Investigators simply wanted to speak with him about Karen’s case. They had no evidence that he was in the area when Karen’s abduction occurred and it’s unknown if he’s still considered a suspect in Karen’s abduction.

Shindong He is considered the primary suspect in Karen’s disappearance. He refused to take a polygraph exam regarding the case and Karen’s teachers at her school told police that Karen would always show up to school with bruises.

He was later convicted of aggravated assault. The victim in that case was Wen Hua, Shindong allegedly jumped on her while they were at a motel in Nashville, Tennessee. During the incident, Shindong admitted to killing Karen. She reported the admission to police but Shindong denied it.

Shindong was subsequently deported back to China due to his aggravated assault conviction. Investigators stated his deportation had nothing to do with Karen’s disappearance but they believe Shindong probably murdered Karen on the day she went missing. Investigators have noted they have no actual proof of Shindong’s involvement and he’s never been charged with a crime.>>

Just like in other cases, the stepfather is the culprit... he surely beat Karen and surely the mother knew it... but perhaps for economic or emotional stability she tolerated him beating Karen... this type of case is more common than we would think... the filthy stepfather surely lives quietly because he knows that they will not prosecute him... and she has not appeared for years... a good girl...
whatever the case
rest in peace
