Circumstances of disappearance

December 26, 2002 - Karina, then 7 years old, spends the second day of Christmas with her mother - Anna and her partner - Piotr in an apartment on Dąbrowskiego Street in Warsaw. Suddenly there was a knock on the apartment door. Peter got to open it. When he opened it, someone shot him in the head. The killer entered then fired several shots at Anna. The couple died instantly. Karina could see what was happening. Most likely, hearing the screams and gunshots, she was terrified, hid and waited for the killer to come out.

It should be noted that Karina's mother Anna, pseudonym "Andzia", and her partner Piotr, pseudonym "Świr", were associated with dangerous criminal groups in Mokotów. They were both involved in drug trafficking.

There are several hypotheses as to why “Andzia” and “Świr” were murdered. From financial settlements to a personal crime committed by "Andzia's" spurned lover. The police are convinced that this was a typical gangster execution, although they make no secret of the fact that the motive remains unclear to this day. In 2004, the Warsaw-Mokotów District Prosecutor's Office abandoned the investigation due to failure to identify the perpetrator of the murder.

An important character in the girl's story is 34-year-old Rafał Mikołajczyk, nicknamed “Święty”. The man was addicted to heroin and was also associated with the world of gangsters. He was hiding from the police, the police was looking for him with an arrest warrant.

Rafał Mikołajczyk had been friends with “Andzia” for many years and knew Karina very well. He was the girl's godfather. Plus, her daughter was in the same class as her. Karina often spent the night with her friend in Mikołajczyk's apartment.

On December 27, 2002 – the day after the tragedy – Rafał Mikołajczyk called Anna. Karina, 7, answered the phone, which would mean she was in the apartment for several hours with the bodies of her mother and partner. After a short conversation with the girl, Mikołajczyk told his partner that he had to go check what happened in Anna's apartment. He contacted his partner again, telling him he couldn't talk now and would explain everything later. However, he never called again. There are many indications that Karina left the apartment in the company of Rafał Mikołajczyk.

The police came to the apartment on New Year's Eve. Earlier, “Andzia's” friend called her sister Małgorzata to inform her that a dog had been barking in the woman's apartment for several days and that the Christmas tree lights were on. At the scene, the police found the bodies of “Andzia” and “Świr” as well as several yellow cartridge cases from 9 mm caliber bullets fired from a CZ pistol. Ballistic tests were recommended, which showed that this weapon had never been used to commit a crime in Poland. Karina was no longer in the apartment. No trace was found that would suggest that the young girl was murdered on the spot or that violence was used against her.

"Dziecko gangu". Zaginiona Karinka

Andzia lived in an environment of drug addicts. She lived with her husband in an apartment in a building that belonged to her parents. It was not a peaceful married life - Andzia soon threw her husband into the basement. He was addicted to heroin. She didn't mind, she was even more upset that her husband was stealing drugs and money from her. The neighbors didn't have an easy time with them: Andzia constantly threw parties and her husband invited other drug addicts. There were syringes and cigarettes lying around the stairwell, it stank of urine and lots of swearing could be heard.

Soon Świr appeared in Andzia's life - a cohabitant and business partner. She traded and had a dozen dealers under her command, and he provided her protection. They felt confident and planned to resume drug trafficking in Mokotów. However, the old guard in Mokotów did not like this.

Did Andzia offend Mokotów's group and did Świr die by accident? Did she push herself too far among the heroin dealers? Or maybe she didn't pay her drug bills and didn't want to pay off her debts? Personal reasons could also be involved: Andzia had a relationship with Oskar Z., who went to prison. After weaning, he wanted to come back to her, but she chose Świra. Oskar was known for his short temper and brutality

(..)

''The saint'' is Andzia's friend, Karina's godfather, but also a heroin addict who trafficked for Andzia in order to earn money for his own plot. According to the police, such a person would not be able to ensure the girl's safety and organize her new life. He could not harm her either - according to those close to him, he loved children and treated Karina very well. Therefore, it is more likely that if he took Karina from the apartment on Dąbrowskiego Street, he turned to someone he knew for help. Without knowing it, he could have asked for help from the murderer of Andzia and Świr or from his accomplices.

(..)

The second suspect for the police was Karina's real father, Krzysiek S. He dealt drugs for Pruszków and was friends with the Saint. Unofficially, it was said that the Saint wanted to meet Krzysiek to give him information about a certain border in Italy where people's identities could be changed. He wanted papers for three people. They probably intended to flee Poland.
(..)

No one has seen him since, said an informant associated with the Pruszków group.

Since December 27, Rafał Mikołajczyk, 27, nicknamed Święta "The Saint", and Karina Surmacz, 7, have been officially missing.

According to reports, someone saw the girl. Two weeks after the murder, Andzia's sister received an anonymous phone call informing her that the saint had been seen in Grochów near Uniwersam and that he was most likely accompanied by Karina. Someone saw the girl on the line 4 tram in the direction of Wyścigi, while someone else saw her near Wileński station, where she was walking with a man she called sometimes “dad” and sometimes “uncle”. (..) Rumors circulated that the wanted couple lived in Canada or Spain.
