Circumstances of disappearance
December 26, 2002 - Karina, then 7 years old, spends the second day of Christmas with her mother - Anna and her partner - Piotr in an apartment on Dąbrowskiego Street in Warsaw. Suddenly there was a knock on the apartment door. Peter got to open it. When he opened it, someone shot him in the head. The killer entered then fired several shots at Anna. The couple died instantly. Karina could see what was happening. Most likely, hearing the screams and gunshots, she was terrified, hid and waited for the killer to come out.
It should be noted that Karina's mother Anna, pseudonym "Andzia", and her partner Piotr, pseudonym "Świr", were associated with dangerous criminal groups in Mokotów. They were both involved in drug trafficking.
There are several hypotheses as to why “Andzia” and “Świr” were murdered. From financial settlements to a personal crime committed by "Andzia's" spurned lover. The police are convinced that this was a typical gangster execution, although they make no secret of the fact that the motive remains unclear to this day. In 2004, the Warsaw-Mokotów District Prosecutor's Office abandoned the investigation due to failure to identify the perpetrator of the murder.
An important character in the girl's story is 34-year-old Rafał Mikołajczyk, nicknamed “Święty”. The man was addicted to heroin and was also associated with the world of gangsters. He was hiding from the police, the police was looking for him with an arrest warrant.
Rafał Mikołajczyk had been friends with “Andzia” for many years and knew Karina very well. He was the girl's godfather. Plus, her daughter was in the same class as her. Karina often spent the night with her friend in Mikołajczyk's apartment.
On December 27, 2002 – the day after the tragedy – Rafał Mikołajczyk called Anna. Karina, 7, answered the phone, which would mean she was in the apartment for several hours with the bodies of her mother and partner. After a short conversation with the girl, Mikołajczyk told his partner that he had to go check what happened in Anna's apartment. He contacted his partner again, telling him he couldn't talk now and would explain everything later. However, he never called again. There are many indications that Karina left the apartment in the company of Rafał Mikołajczyk.
The police came to the apartment on New Year's Eve. Earlier, “Andzia's” friend called her sister Małgorzata to inform her that a dog had been barking in the woman's apartment for several days and that the Christmas tree lights were on. At the scene, the police found the bodies of “Andzia” and “Świr” as well as several yellow cartridge cases from 9 mm caliber bullets fired from a CZ pistol. Ballistic tests were recommended, which showed that this weapon had never been used to commit a crime in Poland. Karina was no longer in the apartment. No trace was found that would suggest that the young girl was murdered on the spot or that violence was used against her.
