Nicked from
http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/en...se-baez-started-questioning-kathi-belich.html

WFTV-Channel 9's Kathi Belich is one of the most aggressive reporters in town.

So she's bound to come in for some needling. And Casey Anthony's attorney Jose Baez did the honors today.

When Belich joined a group of reporters, Baez told her, "You're screwing up everybody's sound bites."

Later, he asked Belich if her name is really Gallagher.

She said she didn't understand his question. Later, she asked: "Has your private investigator been looking into me instead of Casey's case? Why are you asking me the question?"

Baez shot back: "Another reporter told me. You're not well thought of among your colleagues."

As if that mattered. Reporting isn't a popularity contest. What matters is that she has delivered for her bosses at WFTV and for viewers who admire her work. Her name should be Scoop today — she was the first reporter to have Caylee Anthony's autopsy.

For the record, Belich told me in an e-mail: "I have no idea why he would care, but I was married to a Gallagher and have been divorced for more than ten years."

Yep! He's a tool!!

Hi, LancelotLink. Re your bolding. If JB's PIs were looking into Kathi's background ~ I hope to high heaven the state of Florida wasn't paying for that, too!

If I were Kathy Belich, I think I would consider it an honor that Jose Baez is seeking a means to keep me out of the courtroom during the trial of Casey Anthony.

What other reporter, locally or nationally, has made JB quiver with fear when they ask a question? What other reporter has put JB on the spot, asking in depth questions that he cannot or will not answer? What other reporter has made JB look like a fool more often than not?

For a media hungry attorney who argued against a gag order in this case, and who's goal is national recognition as a defense attorney, Kathy Belich has made things difficult for JB from the beginning. She won't ask him the simple questions like "what did you have for lunch today?" She asks questions that often expose JB's incompetence.

Kathy Belich is a top-notch investigative reporter. She just doesn't stand in front of a crime scene and recite the statistics a public information officer handed her 10 minutes ago. She investigates a subject and goes after the nuts and bolts of a case. She often comes up with new information not yet explored by law enforcement.

I would consider it an honor to be chosen by JB as the one reporter he doesn't want in the courtroom taking notes and critiquing his abilities as a defense attorney.

Well there you have it. RHornsby can write an entire blog on the subject of sequestration, include definitions, case law and exceptions about one billion times faster than Jose can belatedly file an amended list of several witnesses with the court.

One reason JB may be playing Svengali with his client and locking her up from access - or making sure the only people she sees are middle-aged females or older, er, gentlemen like Mason is that if she ever chanced to meet our RH she'd drop JB like a hot potato on looks alone - never mind his legal acumen which could outstrip JB even if he were deaf, dumb and blind it would appear. Which is unfortunate, because RH would have likely been able to profit from the high profile nature of this case without jeopardizing his client's best interests, or perhaps at least be able to talk her into the sanity of a plea.

So she is stuck with a fumbling excuse of an attorney that is not eye candy, but I guess we in the "world wide web", to quote the perceptive defense, get the entertainment value of the legal equivalent of Meatballs. Said entertainment value of which has been rapidly wearing off...

Still, RH, you may have gotten the nicer end of the deal. Being a part of that defense team seems to leave detritus in its wake never seen since the King Tut Curse. Even the indirect collateral damage is shocking.

*some parts of my post are paraphrased with much respect*

A most excellent post! Bumpity bump in case someone missed it, it's worth it.
You've explained exactly how I feel, far better than I could.

RHornsby is one fine lawyer. He knows his stuff. I've learned a bit from him about the law. I started out college in pre- law but when we got to torts and easments etc.. bleckkkk. I went the AHT path instead.

I check in on his blog from time to time and early yesterday, there was the answer to the Belich debacle. I actually understood what he was explaining too.

I especially like the way he answers questions from lay folk. When asked a question he doesn't bother with slyly attempting ;) to cause one feel as though their question is vacuous. Great finesse, style and integrity.

He did indeed get the nicer end of the deal. I'm glad too that he did not get involved in this case.

I think you made a good point that if RH was aboard this sinking ship; that he'd attempt to talk ICA into the sanity of a plea, far before the boat started to leak. (sorry I paraprased you, but I couldn't decide which part of your post to bold.)

I'm also glad that Kathi Belich will be allowed in the courtroom...I hope, hope, hope. Who knows in this crazy case? My opinion of Kathi is very much like my opinion of RH.
Hey are either married? Ooooooooooooooooooo.

Oh yeah, Kathi is...bummer.

BBM Yes they both have. Funny how it has only ended up as egg on their own respective faces. Which I think enrages and 'thwarts' them even further. It is amusing to see two 'professional' men behave as children. ITA that they are quite intimidated by Kathi. If they'd only learn to simply ignore her rather than keep trying to get one over on her, they'd spare themselves public humiliation. But I guess that is one lesson they just aren't getting.

JB reminds me a bit of Wile E.Coyote ( super-genius) trying to catch the Road Runner . Kathi just goes Beep Beep and runs off. They can't catch or outwit her, they just make themselves look more stupid each time they try.

Reminds me of CA telling ZFG she didn't hink she was a 10!

People like this infuriate me. They go off on their arrogant ways but never say anythig negative about THEM....seems they can dish it out but can't take it...do you have stomach pains yet???? Boo Hoo...cry baby...:loser:

KB has been a thorn in his side for she asks the most pertinent questions. She broke many a story on the Felonious gang that can't shoot straight, he wishes he could have the tenacity she has. He just makes himself look like a foolish child whining to the courthouse steps. HE actually thinks he's all that...well, Mr. Baez (in His Honors most resonating voice) you are in for the ride of your life, if you come out of this fiasco you call a defense you should consider yourself lucky that KB advertises for YOU...you won't be figthing traffic tickets if I had anything to do with the Florida Bar Association...
To me, YOU are a disgrace for you speak with forked tongue...JMHO

Justice for Caylee can't come quick enough. I wait the day that you are finished, done, kaput...for I believe you are a disgrace to all fine attornies in the US of A....:maddening:

My predictions: :)

** [SNIP] **

3. State's Motion to Strike Belich as witness: if I were HHJP, I would want a little more info about what Belich could possibly say that (1) relates to the State's new witnesses, and (2) isn't covered by the journalist's privilege. I would be concerned that the witness list is being used as a tactic to thwart the 1st Amendment. If it is, I would grant the State's Motion to Strike as it is not "good cause" to list someone as a witness just to thwart the 1st Amendment. However, if HHJP decides to take this filing at face value and denies the State's Motion to Strike Belich as a witness, IMO the State ought to take her depo, get the answers to these questions, and bring the answers to the attention of HHJP if they are "hinky."

** [SNIP] **

Whether or not it matters from a legal standpoint, the attempted use of Belich as a rebuttal witness to the state's rebuttal witnesses of Laura Buchanan is a pretty transparent attempt to simply keep Belich out of the courtroom.

Buchanan would not be put on the stand until after the prosecution was done presenting its case. The state's rebuttal witnesses would not be put on the stand until after the defense was done. And finally, Belich would not be put on the stand until after the state were done rebutting. Pretty much at the tail end of the trial. So it's pretty clear he's attempting to lock the reporter out of the trial.

However, in her own deposition, Buchanan admitted to altering the TES documents and further admitted that if she searched on Hopespring she did not search where Caylee's body was eventually found. She's not credible. She'd be a horrible witness for the defense - perhaps as bad as Joy Wray. Rebuttal witnesses or not, Buchanan will never be put on the stand. And Baez knows it.

So there you have it...Baez has listed a reporter to rebut a half dozen or so witnesses who will rebut a witness he never plans to call.

My thoughts exactly. He's doing this as a strategic measure to lock her out of the trial which would prevent her from reporting on a day by day basis...pointing out the "mistruths" as they happen...how transparent...JMHO

Exactly! Every time I think I couldn't dislike Baez any more...he goes and pulls another zinger. Can't someone...anyone stop this man from making a complete mockery of our Judicial system? He must surly be the biggest joke among his constituents and the butt of many happy hour jokes. jmo

I can hear his small thoughts bouncing around in the cavernous cranium. "She wants to cover this story? Get all up in my biz, I'll give her a view from the witness chair. Now, how many reporters can get that kind of perspective? She should thank me."

Speaking of correct names, did anyone mention yet who Baez/Mason addressed this latest motion to?

MOTION TO STRIKE THE STATE'S MOTION TO STRIKE DEFENSE
SUPPLEMENTAL WITNESS LIST

Hon. KELVIN PERRY JR.

PLEASE NOTE -

I went back to put the link in for someone who asked where the error was and found that this is MY mistake.

Here's the motion:

http://www.docstoc.com/docs/71756940/Motion-to-Strike

On MY desktop is the motion converted to Word by a pdf converter program. I just compared it word for word to be sure it's the same document and it is.

MY CONVERTER MADE THE ERROR - THE CONVERTED DOCUMENT HAS KELVIN PERRY BUT THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT DID NOT.

SO THIS WAS MY MISTAKE AND I HAVE TO APOLOGIZE (GAG ME) TO THE BAEZ LAW FIRM.

If you see anyone carrying on my error, please feel free to correct them and blame me for it.

Baez and Mason have both been abusive to Kathi Belich. Misogyny is a sad and disgusting thing.

I agree...they have been abusive to Kathi Belich and yet they seem to be Okay with the Male reporters.

I haven't entirely read this whole thread, so apologies in advance if this was discussed. What's the chance that Kathi would be officially named a defense witness? Is there any way her journalism status could save her? It's gonna be
disappointing if she's not allowed to report daily on the trial happenings, not just for me but mostly for her. She must be absolutely livid!

Hopefully JB does indeed have the common sense not to call Laura B as a witness. But I'm not holding my breath for common sense to start shining forth from this defense team.

Well there's always the chance he would call her to the stand simply to give her the opportunity to say her current medication has removed all memory of events during the relevant time frame or that she had been kidnapped by aliens and a surrogate planted by the Great Conspiracy of the Prosecution created all that mischief with the dummy report simply to frame someone sympathetic to the defense...

  • #240
Is it possible he has no intention of calling her (even if he was allowed) but wants to take her depo and ask her as many embarrassing questions as he can, as he will have wide latitude, such as her previous marriage, her finances, her bunions, who knows?

And then that will be released through the Sunshine Law?

Do they want her to feel the sting of public humiliation, to neuter her, to embarrass her so much that her career could be altered? They probably think she takes great glee in her reportage of their antics and they want to hurt her. Bad.

I wouldn't put it past them.
