Steven Hedgers
Missing since July 25, 1986 from El Dorado, Kansas
Classification: Endangered Missing

Vital Statistics

  • [*]Age at Time of Disappearance: 27 years old
[*]Distinguishing Characteristics: White male. Brown hair. Glasses.

Circumstances of Disappearance
Steven Hedgers of El Dorado, went missing on or about July 25, 1986. His wife and infant son were enjoying a vacation in Washington at the time. Hedgers stayed home because the family couldn't afford for him to miss work.
He was last seen at a friend's house on July 25 where he had dinner. After four days of trying to phone him from Washington, Hedger's wife called police on the 29th.
The case came to police attention when Hedgers, a local truck driver, never returned home, and his whereabouts were never discovered.
Police found nothing missing from his home, except his wallet, prescription sunglasses and maybe his social security card. His keys were left inside and his truck was left in the driveway. There were no signs of a struggle inside.
Information that lead family and authorities to conclude that the disappearance was likely suspicious included that he took no personal belongings, took no money and left no notes or any communications with people with whom he worked and both of his vehicles were left at his home. At the time of his disappearance, he worked as a trucker for the now-defunct Alpine Petroleum and El Dorado Crude.
Investigators from three states and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have been assisting in this investigation. Information in this case leads investigators to believe that Hedgers may have been murdered and his body hidden in an oil field pit.

Details of Disappearance

Hedgers was last seen at a friend's home in El Dorado, Kansas on July 25, 1986. At the time of his disappearance, his wife and daughter were on vacation in Washington state. Hedgers stayed home because he had to work.

His wife repeatedly tried to call him from Washington over the next several days, but he never answered the phone. He also missed work. His wife reported him missing on July 29.

Hedgers left behind all his personal belongings except his wallet, prescription sunglasses and Social Security card. His truck was found parked in the driveway at his house and his keys were inside the house. There were no indications of a struggle. It appeared he had left the residence with someone he knew.

At the time of his disappearance, he worked as a trucker for the now-defunct Alpine Petroleum and El Dorado Crude company. His son had died less than a year before disappearance.

The last time they spoke, on the day before his disappearance, Hedgers told his mother he had witnessed a drug deal between two of his coworkers. His mother believed he was murdered as a result of what he saw. Her theory has not been verified, however.

Investigators believe Hedgers was a homicide victim. His family now lives in Washington state. His case remains unsolved.
