Murder defense seeks continuance, media controls
Jereme Nelson and Myrta Rangle will each stand trial in connection with three murders in Harvey County late last year - and both are set for a first appearance Feb. 6.

Nelson is facing a possible death penalty, which led district court judge Joe Dickenson to appoint the Death Penalty Defense Unit to Nelson's defense team. The unit has assigned three team members to Nelson's case.

Those three lawyers have filed several motions in district court since becoming members of Nelson's defense.
Among them is a motion to continue a preliminary hearing. (...)

Nelson's council has also filed motions seeking to have him appear in court free of handcuffs or restraints and in civilian clothing. Other motions also include a motion prohibiting trial participants from speaking to media, aside from informing media of court dates connected with the trial. The final motion filed Jan. 31 is a request to bar cameras from the courtroom during proceedings in the case.

Jennyjen, in Kansas, the hard 50 means they would not be eligible for release until 50 years behind bars is served. Kansas doesn't give death penalty but on rare occasions, and I do agree they deserve the death penalty, but either way, they will never again see the light of day, without looking from behind bars...

P.S. appear in street clothes without cuffs??? What a crock! He should be shackled.

Apparently Myrta Rangel was not at the scene during the time of the murders and I am assuming this is why the charges were dropped. The article also says other charges were filed today but the DA did not say what those charges are.

Murder charges against woman jailed in Kansas triple homicide dismissed

Harvey County District Attorney David Yoder said Wednesday that one count of capital murder and three counts of first-degree murder against Myrta Rangel were dismissed without prejudice, which means charges can be refiled.

On 10 January 2022 Jereme Nelson, 39, pleaded guilty to intentional second-degree murder, reckless second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery in the deaths of Travis Street, Angela Graevs, and Richard Prouty in 2016. The plea deal calls for 39 years in prison.

On 7 October 2020 Myrta Rangel pleaded guilty to one count of giving a gun to a person she knew would use it in a drug trafficking crime and one count of giving a gun to a person she knew was a previously convicted felon, and she was sentenced to six years in federal prison.
