Found Deceased KY - Chloe Darnell, 4 ( Brittney Slaughter 24, her cousin/guardian, arrested) not seen since Sep 2023, Canada Town, Whitley County

This whole situation is most unfortunate and disturbing.
Chloe Darnell was separated from her seven siblings and placed in the care of her aunt as her parents are both addicts who live in Louisville
The statement above answers the question regarding how/why Brittney Slaughter was chosen as Chloe's guardian.

IMO it's most regrettable Chloe's guardianship wasn't given to a responsible family member.

Reading the account was heartbreaking.
Agreed. I simply do not understand why there are not more adoptions in situations like this. I get trying to keep a family together - but 7 children and parents not in the picture. It seems like there would be a much better chance that these beautiful, innocent children, born into what seems to be generational dysfunction, would at least have a chance to break the cycle. I'm not saying adoption is easy, but so many kids on this site are shuffled around among family, with little stability, and end up abused or dead. It's heartbreaking.

I agree!! I do NOT understand why adoption isn't considered more. Going from the foster care system to adoption is not as good as vetting a nice couple to adopt a child that is born in to generational dysfunction.

I totally am on board with fostering to adopt, my problem is the ones who look for financial gain. I’ve known some really, really chitty adopters. They are not vetted as they should be.

Oh, I am too. My husband (2nd marriage) adopted 5 boys out of foster care and gave them a fantastic life they wouldn't have had given their previous circumstances. I know this can be a wonderful program. I just believe that if people don't want children, or want to continue with a lifestyle that isn't conducive to having children, they should put their babies up for adoption before they harm them! JMHO

The article said that Chloe was placed with her aunt after birth, so I'm still confused as to how BS (her cousin) ended up as her legal guardian? Even if this aunt is BS's mother it still wouldn't make sense as to why she had legal custody.

Do we know she had legal custody?

A very long informational post from Chloe's Aunt (JG) at link :(
Bumping my post, for those with questions about the custody of Chloe.
Look for the post from JG - "Im Chloe's aunt. Im trying to answer everyone's questions ...."

Per WKYT, she allegedly told police that Chloe didn’t actually go missing, as she reported earlier this month. Instead, she reportedly said that the little girl climbed on a shelf in her bedroom and fell off sometime in August of this year. Slaughter reportedly told police that she didn’t seek medical attention because she was high on illegal narcotics at the time of the alleged accident, which resulted in Chloe’s death.

Couple charged with killing missing 4-year-old who had multiple skull fractures allegedly claimed she fell and they were too ‘high’ to contact authorities

In court on Monday, Whitley County Sheriff's Lt. David Lassiter testified he received a welfare check from the family on November 13, and that later led to a missing person case. When he showed up at the home, he said it was "filthy" and that it was covered in urine and dog feces. There was also a padlock on the door of Chloe's room. Officers later received a search warrant, and when they lifted up new plywood on the floor and found more plywood underneath. The staining on the floor reacted with hydrogen peroxide, which reacts to blood.

Lt. Lassiter says both indicated they were high at the time of the arrest and mentioned marijuana and meth. He estimates he saw a few grams of heroin in the house and a small amount of marijuana along with two scales. A 9mm firearm was also found inside the home.
Testimony: Home of couple accused of murdering Ky. girl was 'filthy,' covered in urine and dog feces

The judge agreed to lower Slaughter’s bond to $250,000, but kept the bond for Hayes at $500,000; the case will go to a grand jury for possible indictment.
Deputy testifies of corporal punishment injuries, efforts to hide body in death of Ky. child

So we are to believe that while Hayes was known to "discipline" Chloe to the point where Brittany would need to intervene, Chloe's death was accidental and her own fault for climbing on a high shelve she was known to climb on and fell.

mmmmkaaaaay

MOO, but if this information is true then how sad a life Chloe had.

Also MOO, but based on this MSM report neither Slaughter or Hayes had any right to be in charge of raising Chloe. Neither of these people seem to have any sense of responsibility from what I've read so far.

I agree. It appears that when granted custody she was not the person she eventually became. It is sad to me that this very young woman was tasked with Chloe's care. Sad to me that Brittany appeared to be her best option. It sounds from family members in articles as if they never would have imagined Brittany choosing this path.

While the cause of death is not yet known, a Whitley County sheriff’s deputy testified that Darnel's body did have several fractures. Hayes had allegedly abused the young child as a form of punishment, leading police to suspect the murder may have been intentional.

The deputy spoke in District Court on Monday, revealing that Slaughter claimed Darnel had never gone missing, as she originally said. She told police that the 4-year-old fell off a shelf in her room, which caused her death.

According to Law & Crime, Slaughter and Hayes say they did not call the police about Darnel's death because they were high on illegal narcotics at the time. Instead, they attempted CPR to resuscitate her

So if I'm understanding this, neither Slaughter or Hayes called 911 or LE, but instead they claim they tried to administer CPR to Chloe because they were both using illegal drugs at the time.

MOO, but I'm withholding judgement on believing their story.

If Chloe had a life-threatening injury, and assuming for a moment that either Slaughter or Hayes actually knew how to perform CPR, or were in a fit physical/mental state to even do so, why wouldn't one person perform CPR while the other person called 911?

It might just be me, but given the horrid living conditions in the home, including drugs, at least one weapon, and a "padlock on the door of Chloe's room", I am having difficulty believing Slaughter's statement that Chloe accidentally fell off a shelf, resulting in multiple skull fractures. This is MOO.

So we are to believe that while Hayes was known to "discipline" Chloe to the point where Brittany would need to intervene, Chloe's death was accidental and her own fault for climbing on a high shelve she was known to climb on and fell.
Exactly. That's what I'm wondering about. All we know for sure at this time is that Slaughter claims Chloe's death was an accident.

Lopez remembers calling Slaughter on November 3 to ask to speak to Chloe via video call.

“I asked her ‘Brittany, where’s Chloe? Let me talk to Chloe,” Lopez said - unable to contain her tears, explaining she was told “she’s in her room, she’s playing.”

Rest easy, Chloe. You deserved so, so much better than you got.

I can’t stand people who hurt children when there are so many options to put that child in the care of someone else. IMO at 24 years old, you know when you’re going down the wrong path. At the point that BS started doing drugs, she should’ve reached out for help with Chloe. The aunt says on FB that the other kids are in her care. Put Chloe there too. Ruin your own life, whatever, but don’t hurt an innocent child or put them in harms way because you want to get high. And for the record, I have all the sympathy in the world for addicts. It’s a terrible disease. Heck, I’ve been there before! But there’s no excuse to not get that kid out of your house when you are using. JMO IMO all of that. I’m just heated right now. Chloe was dealt such a crap hand in life. It’s not fair.

I call <advertiser censored> - they are both lying. There was a padlock on the door of Chloe's room. Can any one of us say we have ever put a padlock on our child's bedroom door? This child was undoubtedly locked in her room for long periods of time. She was abused to the point of death, there was no "accidental fall". Chloe was struck on the head with an object - after which neither of them sought medical treatment for her.

I hope they both get LWOP!! Brittany should have left or given Chloe to one of the other relatives, she had alternatives to letting her die
