A Democratic candidate for mayor in Louisville, Kentucky, was the target of a shooting Monday morning at his campaign headquarters, authorities said.

Democrat Craig Greenberg was the target of the shooting in the city's Butchertown neighborhood, Louisville Metropolitan Police Department Chief Erika Shields said, adding that although there were no injuries in the incident, a round did appear to strike Greenberg's clothing.

Quintez Brown, 21, has been charged with attempted murder and four counts of wanton endangerment in the first degree in connection with the shooting, according to Louisville Metro Police Department Public Information Officer Elizabeth Ruoff.

The Louisville Community Bail Fund posted the $100,000 bond for the man charged with opening fire at a Louisville mayoral candidate's office Monday morning.

Quintez Brown, 21, is charged with attempted murder and four counts of wanton endangerment after allegedly firing shots inside the campaign office of Craig Greenberg.

At his arraignment Monday, Judge Annette Karem raised Brown's bond from $75,000 to $100,000 and said if bond was posted, Brown would be released to home incarceration. Attorney Rob Eggert said in court that he planned to have a psychiatric evaluation for Brown, whom he said has "serious mental issues."

In 2021, Brown disappeared for two weeks, prompting a media manhunt as the local reporters who promoted him constantly tweeted and wrote about his disappearance. Rumors circulated that he had been killed by police. He was eventually located on a park bench in New York City.

Quintez Brown's attempt to shoot Craig Greenberg is a reckoning moment

Brown reemerged in 2022, running for local office and apparently drifting toward even more radical politics than before. The Daily Beast reported that Brown had been meeting recently with a Black nationalist organization with a long history of antisemitic views.

We don’t know for sure what led Brown to shoot at Greenberg, a prominent figure in Louisville’s Jewish community, but it is fair to ask whether this was a hate crime.

WOW, he should have been released to the hospital for treatment. What is to say he won't do it again. Very worrisome.

I find it a bit appalling that a community organization would post bond for an attempted murder/possible hate crime. I support community bonds programs, but ONLY for non-violent offenders.

Louisville mayoral candidate Craig Greenberg has released a statement following the release of Quintez Brown from jail, saying the news has left him and his family "traumatized again."

We spoke with an organizer with the Louisville Community Bail Fund, Chanelle Helm, on Wednesday about the decision to release Brown.

"What we become so enthralled in is knowing there is a system willing to punish people even before they are officially charged with their crimes," Helm said. "We're talking about jail, we're talking about a system that has people sit in jail for years without seeing hearings and trials and play back and forth with their mental health."

*I thought he had been charged (jmo) but maybe that's not "official"??

"It is nearly impossible to believe that someone can attempt murder on Monday and walk out of jail on Wednesday," said Greenberg, who'd previously been hesitant to talk about whether the $100,000 bond amount for Brown was appropriate. "If someone is struggling with a mental illness and is in custody, they should be evaluated and treated in custody.

All candidates should be fearful at this point. (imo)

Unbelivable.

Except that regulars here believe it....

Agree with Greenberg re: treatment in custody!

Attempted murder of a member of a group the shooter has targeted previously -- sounds like a racially motivated hate crime to me!

Glad Greenberg & his staff are OK. (We'll see the shirt if this goes to trial imho.)

Jan 19 of this year:

State representatives have introduced a bill into the House seeking to make charitable or crowdfunded bail organizations illegal in Kentucky.

House Bill 313, sponsored by Rep. John Blanton (R-District 92) and Rep. Jason Nemes (R-District 33), seeks to amend Kentucky Revised Statute 431.510, which prohibits the act of business as a bail bondsman.

HB 313 is also known as Madelynn’s Bill in honor of Madelynn Troutt, a 17-year-old Butler High School senior. On March 1, 2021, Madelyn was driving along Dixie Highway when her car was hit head-on by a stolen pickup truck being driven by Michael Jacob Dewitt, 28.

Less than two weeks before the deadly crash, Dewitt had been released from jail on other charges after his bond was posted by The Bail Project. The organization uses donations to bail people out of jail.

Hope they don't have to change the name of that bill to "Craig's Law"...

Shameka Parrish-Wright - The Bail Project
....

The latest campaign finance numbers show activist and Democrat Shameka Parrish-Wright has raised roughly $37,000 since the start of her campaign, but has just $3,000 left in the bank. Parrish-Wright, who was a leader in last year’s racial justice protests in Louisville, has repeatedly brushed aside the notion that fundraising numbers are a good predictor of support.

Justice must not be tainted by political bias or any bias for that matter. I'm afraid this a glimpse into the future.
