I just do not understand the mindset there. If you are concerned enough for your personal safety that you would say that to your family - then why remain in that house with him? I understand the victim mindset but, if you're now to mentally cowed to tell your family something like that, why would you stay? So sad...

The two reasons given by women in relationships with abusive men are fear and a lack of other viable options. That does not mean there are no options, but the victim doesn't see them as being "safe". In the past, I have worked with abused women and there are some major clues here about the dynamics in Crystal's world. 1) She has a history of making wrong choices regarding men. 2) She lacks the ability to financially provide for her 5 children without support from family and her ex-boyfriends/husbands. 3) There is intense dislike/hatred between her family and her child's father which typically means that in order to receive help from them she must promise not to interact with him. A scenario we have encountered on WS and in the news, too many times, is one where the child's father threatens to harm the child or take sole custody if the mother attempts to leave. There are also threats against the mother and/or the mother's family or other children. I believe her disappearance confirms her reasons for being fearful. The fact that her boyfriend has LE connections adds an extra layer of fear to her daily life. I'm not convinced they were still in a "love" relationship. There are rumors of another woman in his life and it seems that they were simply two parents sharing a house. Her other children were staying with family members, which leads me to believe that he had little interest in forming a "family unit". The number of women (and sometimes men) living in abusive relationships out of, well-founded, fear are staggering. Even with restraining orders and safe houses LE is, too often, unable to prevent harm to the parent/child. imho

Has anyone said publicly that they were expecting her? Has her cousin confirmed that she would often come to spend the night? Would she do so unannounced?

I don't believe other than what BH said that it has been mentioned anywhere.

Depending on how deep a nail is, it can take days for it to go flat. Essentially, it acts kind of like a plug and usually it's a fairly slow leak. On top of that, nails don't always even puncture the tire enough for it to go flat. I'd imagine she drove over a nail prior without even realizing it. At least, that's the way the investigators made it seem when they pointed out that the nail was pretty worn. If it were in the sidewall, it would be a little more suspicious because those tend to deflate the tire a lot quicker. I don't think anyone intentionally tried to puncture her tire.

That's an excellent point. I've had my share of nails, too. :) If her tires were in crappy shape it might happen faster, but probably still hard to predict. It also raises the question in my mind: if it was a slow leak, like we're thinking of, why didn't she ever notice the tire looking low or the car driving funny? I have a tire pressure warning system on my truck and I still quickly eye my tires every morning when I leave for work. I realize some people just wander through life, not paying attention to their surroundings, and maybe she is that type of person, but a car steers "mushy" when it has a low tire. You would think she'd feel that before getting into real trouble.

So many things about this case don't make sense. If she was going to visit BH family on the evening of July 3 and later using her phone, why wasn't she communicating with her daughter and mother? If she was expected to be at a family gathering on July 4, did anybody try finding her then, and where did they look? Why wasn't she reported missing until Sunday?

Maybe didn't notice or ignored it because was dark out, in a hurry to get rid of the car. I've had nails in tires where the tire was fine and then the next day super low or flat. Then I fill it with air and its fine for a few more days and then overnight, suddenly flat again. I am horrible about getting tires fixed!

He's not running for sheriff anymore. He got slaughtered in May, 2014 by Mattingly

I realized, but thank you. My point was simply that he ran for Sheriff and, therefore, one would expect that he would at least publicly go through the motions of what the general public would consider right and decent - to report her missing.

By an overwhelming majority, Ed Mattingly won the Democratic nomination for sheriff in Tuesday’s primary election.
Mattingly, a sergeant with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, beat candidate Brooks Houck with more than 77 percent of the vote. The unofficial results were 3,712 to 551. Kenny Downs, who filed for the Sheriff’s Office but later withdrew, although his name remained on the ballot, garnered 547 votes.

This is an interesting little tidbit
Houck is a real estate agent who owns two businesses, Houck Rentals and Select Quality Homes.

Wowsers thats a landslide. Either folks did not like him or his agenda? Or both?

I need to see if I can find any articles from their local paper about it. I don't really understand why someone would run for sheriff when they have zero law enforcement experience. It's a little presumptuous.

This guy is just an arrogant dufus. He doesn't even have training in LE and he is out running for Sheriff. Why would anybody waste a vote on him ? I hope that LE continues to let him talk himself into a corner, while pretending to buddy up with him at the same time. In the beginning I thought it was odd how the REAL Sheriff kept referring to how cooperative and helpful Houck had been, but now I see the logic behind it.
Thankfully, Houck doesn't.

That comment made me almost spit my pop out! The perfect adjective because it really is true IMO!

Yes I agree and it would be interesting to know the way these two really feel about each other. I can't believe the local sheriffs office is handling this investigation. Usually state moves right in where there is a conflict of interest and there surely is here with relatives on both sides in local law enforcement.

I am thinking Houck ran on name recognition but didn't do much in the burning shoe leather dept.
Some people just throw their name in the ring like throwing something against the wall to see if it will stick.

I still can't get by him driving by in a police cruiser while searchers were looking for the mother of his child.

This happens in my area every so often.
Someone doesn't like the sheriff and he's running again or they don't like the ones they hear are running and must think I could do a better job. They get a handful or so of votes and never make it in.

I may just start calling this guy Drew.
