Schroering said in cross-examination that Lawson's step-daughter had been evicted from one of Houck's properties, showing text messages from August 2015 in which the woman's husband asked Houck about looking at a new house.

As for Nick Houck, who Snow earlier testified told Brooks Houck, basically, to stop talking to police, Schroering said Brooks Houck told him "ask what you have to ask" after talking to his brother.

Also, Schroering asked Snow on the stand about the video of the July 8 interview being released to the public in October 2015. Snow said the interview was sent to the Bardstown Police Department, but he wasn't sure how it got out.

As a result, Schroering indicated any possible witness from that point on would be able to see Brooks Houck's interview, which he said received more than 150,000 views. He also talked about Snow being interviewed for a six-part series on the Oxygen Network in 2018. Schroering's point to the jurors was to show witness testimony could have been tainted by the public interviews.

Schroering made a point to note Houck affirmed Rogers wasn't suicidal and didn't do drug. In the inerview with Snow played for the jruy, he also didn't have any additional theories for what might have happened to her.

Crystal Rogers case: Trial updates

1:12 p.m.
Court is now on a lunch break until 1:15 p.m. CT, or 2:15 p.m. ET.
Prior to the break, Brooks Houck's defense attorney, Steve Schroeing began his cross-examination of former Nelson County Detective Jon Snow.
Snow confirmed that after four years of investigation, there had been no arrests or any evidence discovered in the case.
"We had no information of the method of death," Snow told Schroeing.

The defense also showed text messages between Steve Lawson's son-in-law and Houck in which they were looking for a house in August 2015.
He argued Steve Lawson's step-daughter was looking for a house when he called Brooks on July 3, 2015.
Schroeing also said that detectives had received a tip from a couple who said they saw Rogers on July 5, 2015 in a red sedan on Highway 49. They said she looked "distraught" and "upset."
When court returns from break, the defense will continue its cross-examination.

Crystal Rogers case: Trial updates

3:24 p.m.
The defense's cross-examination of Snow continues.
Schroeing pointed to Brooks Houck's phone records which show he tried calling Rogers twice on July 4 and once on July 5, 2015. Snow said it appears those calls went to voicemail.
Houck then texts Barbara Roby, a relative of Rogers' and a former Bardstown police officer, asking if she's been able to reach Rogers. She said she also hadn't heard from her.
He then asked Roby for another relative's phone number, Sabrina Ballard, to again try to locate Rogers, but to no luck.
"Everyone is worried sick...please call me back," Houck texts Rogers after being unable to contact her, according to screenshots shown in court.
Schroeing said Houck wasn't worried at first when Rogers went missing because she had left before, to which Snow said that would happen if they were fighting.
The defense then showed more screenshots of texts between Houck and Rogers on April 25, 2015.
In the messages, Rogers accuses Houck of not treating her right and he tells her that leaving home with nowhere to go isn't safe. "Running from your problems won't fix them," he says in another text.

After Snow stepped down from the stand, Judge Charles Simms asked the jury if they had any questions, which they did.
Jurors wanted to know if the clothes Rogers was seen wearing in the Walmart surveillance video was found inside her home, which Snow said no.
They also wanted to know if Brooks Houck left voicemails for Rogers when she didn't pick up the phone after her disappearance. Snow said investigators don't believe he did.
The jury then heard from several business owners and witnesses who denied seeing Houck on July 3, even though he claimed to have met with them that day. Many said they were closed due to the holiday weekend.
One of the witnesses was the owner of a Radio Shack in Bardstown, Marcella Ray, who sold Houck an audio recorder on July 6, 2015. She said Houck specifically wanted to buy "the best" he could.
Ray said she printed out a photo of Houck holding the recorder and child because it stood out to her. She testified that every time his son would lift his head, Houck would tell him to put it down. She held on to the records and receipt until 2020 when she contacted the FBI.
Richie Riggs, a realtor who worked closely with Houck, later took the stand.
During his testimony, Riggs said he ran into Rogers about a week before she disappeared. He told Prosecutor Shane Young that Rogers was worried about Houck kicking her out of the house.

Court has adjourned for the day. The jury return at 8:30 a.m. CT on Friday.
Danny Singleton was one of the last witnesses to take the stand. During opening statements, the prosecution claimed Brooks Houck's mom, Rosemary, spoke to Singleton two weeks prior to Rogers' disappearance.
Singleton admitted to having a conversation with Rosemary at a jobsite. He said she wanted to find someone to "get rid" of Rogers.
"I told her around this town and with money, you can get anything done," he testified, adding that he didn't tell Brooks Houck about the conversation. "It's the truth that she wanted someone to do it, not me to do it."

"Everyone is worried sick," a July 5, 2015, text message read, according to evidence provided in court Thursday on the third day of Houck's murder trial. "Please call me back."

On July 5, evidence showed the following text messages between Houck and Rogers' cousin, Sabrina:

Houck: "What's up it's Brooks ... Is Crystal with you"

Sabrina: "No ... Haven't seen her"

Another text thread shown in court Thursday between Houck and Rogers was from April 26, about six weeks before Rogers disappeared:

Rogers: "I cannot deal with the way you treat me anymore. I'm tired of always being on the back burner ..."

Houck: "Please come back home ... Running from your problems won't fix them."

Video played for the court of a July 8, 2015 interview between Houck and Snow shows it was interrupted at one point when Houck received a phone call from his brother, Nick Houck, who worked as an officer for the Bardstown Police Department.

Nick urged Houck to stop the interview, Snow testified. The interview was halted shortly after the call ended, but Snow revealed during cross-examination that the interview was already winding down.

Later the same day, Snow testified that surveillance video showed Nick following Houck to the residence of their mother, Rosemary Houck, on the Houck family farm, which is also the location where Rogers was last seen.

Video from the same July 8 interview shows Houck adjusting something in his pocket, which was later discovered to be a recording device, Snow said.

I have faith that these conniving murderers are going to be convicted. Their stories sound so implausible. Too bad Momma H and Brother H aren't charged as well.

TONIGHT ON WHAS11+: Tune in at 9 p.m. ET for special trial coverage in the Crystal Rogers case with Shay McAlister, Alexandra Goldberg, and Doug Proffitt, as well as insight from WHAS11 legal analyst Nick Mudd.

Crystal Rogers case: Trial updates

0:26 a.m.
Testimony began with the Commonwealth's 15th witness, Robin Mills.
Mills, a civil engineer who Houck had hired to help him develop a subdivision, was another witness who Brooks Houck said he met with on July 3, 20215 in his 8-page written statement.
She also testified to not meeting with him since she was out of the office that day. Houck's defense said he didn't say that he met with her, however, only that he was "working on plans."

The next witness for the morning was Ashley Nally. She said she grew up with Rogers and didn't like her.
"We had personality conflicts," Nally said, adding the Rogers wasn't an "outdoorsy" person. "I think she was more the type to stay in city limits with her kids."
Although Nally said the two didn't get along, she always saw Rogers with her son and called her an amazing mother.

The next witness primarily focused on poking holes in the defense's new theory that Steve and Joseph Lawson weren't on the Bluegrass Parkway moving Rogers' car.
Heath Snelling is Steve Lawson's ex-girlfriend, who the defense says hit their shared car on Boston Road after an argument. That road runs parallel to the Bluegrass Parkway, which is why the defense argues the Lawson's phones pinged near there.
Snelling said she and Steve Lawson bought the car together in 2014. When they broke up, she got the car.
"Explain what was going on with the car," Prosecutor Shane Young said.
"I was making payments and it was taken from me, without my knowledge," she said.

Heather Snelling, Steve Lawson's ex-girlfriend, said she overheard the Lawsons talk about moving a body on the Houck family farm. | June 27, 2025
On July 3, 2015, Snelling said she spotted the car after leaving from work, had the key fob, opened the door and drove away.
She said she took the car to a family member's house on Boston Road. On July 4, 2015, she went to the car and cleaned it out, finding needles, a bag of soured clothes, and a little Slugger bat.
In 2017, the couple reconnected after Steve Lawson's wife died and they dated for about a month.
Young asked what she heard about Rogers while she was at the Lawson's house.
Snelling testified that she overheard Steve and Joseph Lawson talking about moving a body at the Houck family farm with a skid steer. A skid steer is a very maneuverable machine which usually has a bucket on the front. Skid steers are used for digging, moving things, landscaping and construction.
She said she never told the police about the comment, and when questioned by the FBI in 2021, she still didn't mention it.
In 2023, when she was contacted by Kentucky State Police, Snelling talked about the car incident, but not the Lawson's conversation. She said she later called KSP back to tell them more.
"I didn't want to be involved," she explained.
A portion of Snelling's written statement to police after her interview was read in court, in which she said she didn't know anything about Rogers' disappearance.
"I wanted to distance myself, I didn't want to be involved. I'm a single mother," she added. "The truth is I overheard Steve Lawson and Joseph Lawson moving a body at the Houck farm with a skid steer."
During Snelling's testimony, members of Rogers family could be seen very emotional in the gallery, many wiping tears.
8:30 a.m.
The third day of testimony in Brooks Houck and Joseph Lawson's murder trial begins at 8:30 a.m. CT, or 9:30 a.m. ET.
On Thursday, Danny Singleton was one of the last witnesses to take the stand and testify.
During opening statements, the prosecution claimed Brooks Houck's mom, Rosemary, spoke to Singleton two weeks prior to Rogers' disappearance.

Asked by Young why she sent the statement to KSP, she said she wanted to "distance herself from the case" because she was scared.

"The truth is I overheard Steve Lawson and Joseph Lawson talking about moving body at the Houck farm with a skid steer," Snellen testified

Snellen also testified about a car she got after breaking up with Steve Lawson in 2014. The car has been a through-line of the trial so far, with the defense using it to explain Steve Lawson's whereabouts July 4. The prosecution used cellphone data to place Steve Lawson on the Bluegrass Parkway, where Rogers' car was found running the day after she disappeared. But the defense contends he was actually picking up another car that had been taken by his ex-wife and was on Boston Road, which runs parallel to the Bluegrass Parkway.

Snellen testified Friday she left work early July 3 — at 10 p.m. in the middle of a 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. shift — and, after being picked up by her ex-husband, saw her car on the way home, used a spare key fob she had and drove it to a home on Boston Road. The next day, July 4, she testified she went back to the car to clean it out and found needles, blankets, a tourniquet, a big bag of soiled wet clothes and a Louisville Slugger bat.

The purpose of her testimony, in the prosecution's narrative, was to prove Steve Lawson couldn't have gone to retrieve that car on Boston Road, as the defense claims, because Snellen had the car July 3 and July 4

What do y'all think about the stuff Snellen found in her car. The Louisville Slugger bat, wet/soured clothes, needles, blanket, and tourniquet?

I'm guessing her boyfriend Steve was doing drugs. The bat and other stuff was used to move Crystal and kill her. I want to know if the bat was the murder weapon.
Steve knows who killed Crystal and where her body is IMO.

I don't know if there is a way to squeeze Steve to get that information at this point or not.

Snellen, Steve Lawson's ex-girlfriend who testified that she heard the Lawsons talk about moving a body on the Houck family farm with a skid steer, remains on the stand under cross-examination from Houck's attorney, Brian Butler.
Butler said Joseph Lawson had texted her about what he was doing the Fourth of July weekend in 2015.
When Snellen told police about what he said, Butler accused investigators of threatening her saying they warned her life could be ruined if she didn't remember more.
"They threatened you when you didn't do anything wrong," he said.
Butler then played a portion of Snellen's interview with Kentucky State Police for the jury.

"They killed Crystal Rogers," an investigator says.
"I honestly don't know, and I don't know where she's at," Snellen responds.
During her testimony for the prosecution, Snellen said she didn't open up about the Lawsons' conversation initially because she wanted to distance herself from the investigation.
She also explained that the officers "weren't nice" and yelled at her, making her cry.
"I wanted to distance myself, I didn't want to be involved. I'm a single mother," she told the jury earlier in the morning.

I believe the bat was their son Eli’s. It may indeed be the murder weapon but I’ve always had a gut feeling that a gun was the murder weapon as was used in all the other Bardstown murders.

The former girlfriend of a man convicted in the murder of Bardstown mother Crystal Rogers testified Friday she heard one of the suspects on trial this week discuss moving a body with a skid steer.

Heather Snellen, the former girlfriend of Steven Lawson, also told jurors she found needles, tourniquets, a Louisville Slugger baseball bat and “sour-smelling, wet” clothes in the back of a car she shared with her then-boyfriend the day after Rogers disappeared

Crystal Rogers case: Trial updates

1:03 p.m.
Court is now on a lunch break until 1 p.m. CT, or 2 p.m. ET.
Prior to the break, the prosecution called Tim O'Daniel, who created the Louisville Metro Police Department's digital forensics unit, to testify. He also testified during Steve Lawson's trial in May.
O'Daniel reviewed cell records for Steve Lawson, Brooks Houck and Nick Houck.
During his testimony, he provided a timeline of Houck's movements on July 3, 2015.

Tim O'Daniel, an LMPD Digital Forensics expert, testifies during second trial in Crystal Rogers case. | June 27, 2025

According to the cell records, Houck visited the family farm around 9:30 a.m. He stayed in that area until 4 p.m. before leaving for a lumber store at 4:22 p.m.
Between 4:43 p.m. and 7:05 p.m., the investigator said Houck stayed at his home on Glenview Drive after leaving the store.
Around 7:05 p.m., Houck left his home and arrived at the family farm around 7:25 p.m.
The prosecution then played a video showing Houck's phone move around the farm between 7:24 p.m. until 11:57 p.m.
O'Daniel said Houck's phone was later tracked to the parking lot of the Old Kentucky Home campground around 12:08 a.m. the morning of July 4.

Crystal Rogers case: Trial updates

3:26 p.m.
During his testimony with Prosecutor Shane Young, O'Daniel said Nick Houck's phone had been turned off between July 2 and July 4, 2015. He added that cell records put Steve Lawson "in the general area of the Bluegrass Parkway" near Rogers' car.
Houck's attorney Brian Butler then began a tense cross-examination of O'Daniel.
O'Daniel confirmed there was no cell records for Joseph Lawson and no Google cell data, which he testified was more accurate in pinpointing location, for Steve Lawson.
The cross-examination then became very technical with O'Daniel explaining how cell towers pick up pinged locations.

O'Daniel said investigators have to be "really careful" with "tower dumps," these are records provided by cell carriers. The "dumps" are large batches that include every phone number that connected to a particular cell tower during a certain time.
He said its up to the phone company's employees to make their best shot at providing accurate and complete records.
Butler and O'Daniel were also becoming more sharp with one another in their responses.
"Joey Lawson's number is not in there, you can take all the time you want," Butler said.
"I'll take your word that Joey Lawson's number is not in there," O'Daniel replied.
The detective explained that topography, like hills or concrete walls, can impact whether a phone successfully pings off a tower.
Butler then showed the jury a picture of Rogers' abandoned car on the Bluegrass Parkway, pointing to the cell tower in the background.
"Huh, I don't see any concrete or hills in front of that cell tower," he said. "Nothing impeding it."

Crystal Rogers case: Trial updates

4:16 p.m.
Court adjourned for the day. The jury will return to court on Monday at 8:30 a.m. CT, or 9:30 a.m. ET.
Prior to the court's adjournment, Butler cross-examined O'Daniel about Houck's phone being pinged at the Old Kentucky Home campground was just his phone picking up Wifi spots as he's driving home. He called it a "stopover theory."
One of the final witnesses to testify was Houck and Rogers' neighbor on Glenview Drive, Mary Mattingly.
Mattingly said she and Rogers were friends who talked often. The last time they spoke was over text on July 3.
She testified that when she woke up around 6 a.m. on July 4, 2015, her mom asked where Rogers' car was.
"Crystal didn't get up early in the morning," Mattingly testified.

The neighbor also noticed strange behavior across the street in the days after Rogers' disappearance.
Mattingly said she saw Rosemary and Nick Houck at Houck's home nearly every day.
She testified that one day she saw Houck's mom and brother enter the home and then stepped out to turn their cars around so their trunks faced the home's basement. She then saw Nick Houck carry four bags from the cars' trunks into the home. Mattingly described the bags as "white bags, not like trash bags."
