Wow. And he is too so that there is not a lifetime of susicion on him. I still cant believe he searched so long without calling for help before it got dark. Maybe he kept thinking he could locate her.

Great news on her getting out safely. We need more stories with happy endings.

"She said she walked all the way to the dam Thursday and felt like she was walking in circles. "

She may have in fact been walking in some circles as that can actually happen when lost in the woods. I had learned about that a long time ago. What happens is you usually have 1 foot/leg which is dominant and so as you begin walking your dominant foot tends to push harder and makes you slightly turn with each step you take and so you end up walking in a huge circle.

The way to combat that in the woods is to pick out a sightline ahead of you and walk to it. Like a forked tree or something way out in the distance. Then when you get close to there you pick out the next sightline and keep doing that to try to go straight.

Whenever I am planning to be in some deep woods I always take a GPS and extra batteries and a compass. I had gotten a handheld one years ago and I love it. I mark my starting position as a landmark before i set out and then whenever I want to go back it is a piece of cake.

Just dont drop or break your GPS and have plenty of extra batteries to take with you.

This is such a GREAT post Hatfield. I live in the mountains, it's home. Hubby can get turned around real quick, me, nope. I was taught as a child to make mental notes of my surroundings! Love this post!!

This happened to an old boyfriend of mine and his best friend/my best friend's boyfriend several years ago. They were following a trail and then some trees meant to be cleared for a future trail had been marked with the same color as that of the original trail. By the time they realized something was wrong, they'd lost track of both the trails and the marked trees. By 11 pm they weren't home and not answering calls so we drove to the trailhead and found the car they went in. Obviously freaking out, we drove to an area with signal and called the police. A SAR operation was started, their families came in from out of town, the teams couldn't find any trace of them for hours and hours. The next day not long after noon the two of them walked right out of the woods into the search staging area.

The scene stealer was my big loveable Rottweiler mix, though, who was with them. The SAR team fed him breakfast sandwiches and loved on him and he got the most screen time for the local news interview.

Couldn't find much about it except this archived article, it was 11 years ago. http://accesswdun.com/article/2007/1/109589

Thinking of Foxfire right now! He was watching over her for sure. As a matter of fact, right now there is a new television documentary on mystery at Blood Mountain , the case Foxfire followed.
