Do you know exactly where in Fayette County/Lexington these remains were found? I live locally and don't recall any news about this. There were multiple sets of unidentified remains found in Lexington that summer, and it would help to know the location of these.

Edit: never mind, I think I've tracked this down....the remains found in the 2000 block of Versailles Road. The phrase "pipe and steel wool" give a clue; the decedent was probably a methamphetamine addict. Lexington attracts a lot of transients, panhandlers, and addicts; as a friend of mine points out, such people can't get any money begging in the small towns in KY, so they gravitate to Lexington. Those sorts are, by nature, hard to identify after death.

I would think the library card would've made this name easy to trace.

Maybe they have a name attached to the card but can't confirm it for whatever reason. Although you'd think it would be on the NAMUS profile.

Kroger cards are linked to phone numbers, no? I’m assuming they looked up both cards (library + Kroger) and who they belong to. I wish we knew more about that
