man who was an escaped fugitive at the time of a 7-year-old Kentucky girl's abduction has been charged in her killing 30 years later, according to authorities.

Morgan Jade Violi was abducted while playing outside her apartment building July 24, 1996, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and, for 30 years, her case remained cold until recent advancements in forensic science linked Robert Scott Froberg to her killing.

Froberg, who was already in the Alabama prison system, was charged Thursday with kidnapping resulting in death, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky Kyle G. Bumgarner said at a press conference Friday.

Very glad to see this one resolved -- she always seemed like such a great wee bairn.

How strange is it that a felon on the run decides to commit this horrific crime, seemingly new to his criminal repertoire? Then again, maybe it was long contemplated...

Froberg had escaped from the Alabama prison system in April 1996 and was reported to later have talked to a 7-year-old boy in Pennsylvania while hiding in a child’s tree house.

Genuinely bizarre.

But in February, a suspect was finally identified by authorities: Robert Froberg. When the U.S. Attorney’s Office named him in the long-awaited break in the cold case, they dropped the bombshell that the 62-year-old had reportedly confessed to the crime.

But since then, the suspect has taken a different stance.

Inside the courtroom, a judge advised Froberg of his rights and advised him that he could face life in prison or the death penalty for his charge of kidnapping resulting in death.

Froberg entered a not guilty plea.
