Lexington Police and the Coroner responded to La Rochelle Drive and Bordeaux Drive at 1 a.m. on Sunday to a report of an infant in the roadway. When they arrived they found the body of the baby. The Coroner said the infant was found by someone in the area who was passing by and he believes the baby was a newborn and wasn't delivered at a hospital.

Neighbors said that a situation like this is very unusual and that the neighborhood is usually safe and quiet.

OMG this is terrible. Also, what in the world?!
“Additional histology and evaluation from the medical examiner's office are pending. Police said Monday they are not investigating the case and have turned it over to the coroner's office.”

Here's more info:

Coroner Ginn also believes the baby was a newborn and wasn't delivered at a hospital. Ginn says the preliminary autopsy showed no apparent signs of trauma. He is waiting for evaluations from the medical examiner to determine a cause of death.

A spokesperson for Lexington Police says the department is not currently investigating because the coroner's office is handling the investigation. Lexington Police will get involved if the coroner determines the cause of the baby's death to be homicide or trauma.

Wouldn’t it be considered abuse of a corpse if the baby was in the road?? I can’t come up with any logical reason why that poor baby ended up there to begin with! Seems odd that police are hands off...I guess autopsy will be the deciding factor.

I agree, doesn't make sense to me that LE would not be investigating. It is obvious that a crime has been committed when a newborn baby is found in the roadway.

....when a newborn baby is found dead in the roadway.

Yeah, why would LE not investigate? Or will they if coroner determines the baby took breaths before dying? Wonder if baby was thrown in trash and got dropped in street from trash truck or by animal???? Or could this be a funeral home blunder???

I live one city away, this is so sad and unnecessary. I believe 2 things are happening. The police hope the person who did this comes forward and that the coroner’s findings will provide the complete picture to assemble a list of charges against the mother and any others involved. If they list all the possible charges, it may deter the mother from coming forward. Just my opinion

The absolute ONLY reason I can think of for the police to have a hands-off attitude is if there were no injury to the child and it was stillborn? But in the MIDDLE OF A ROAD?!!!!!!! Jimminy Crickets! Get a heart!

It's possible the mother is a frightened teenager who gave birth secretly and in fear of her parents. At least the baby was left where she would be found and not just dumped in a bin.

residential area. Wonder how many teens are in that area?

This is my exact thought, though I have a feeling it was dumped elsewhere and dragged into the roadway by an animal or bird.

Gosh, how terribly sad.... seems the baby was left there in hopes someone would find it? I'm thinking must be a local teen as well.

If it was a teen, I really hope they do investigate---because mom may be in serious need of medical help after giving birth. Especially the trauma of giving birth alone, in secret. Plenty of things could go wrong. I would hate for a scared teen or young woman, to have a stillborn, and then not get needed care, and have life long medical issues, because of fear.
