I came across this case the other day. She's been missing out of Kentucky since 1996. The circumstances of her disappearance are indicative of foul play.

I came across some articles about this case but most of them are behind a paywall.

To try to summarize:
Alyne was last seen on April 12, 1996 (Friday), in Mammoth Cave, KY. A neighbor spoke with her that afternoon. The local sheriff's office was contacted two days later (Charley Project says three), after no one had been in contact with her. A deputy forced entrance into her home, and found evidence of a struggle in her bedroom. A family member indicated she may have been involved in a relationship with a younger man, but no name was provided.

This was just updated on the Charley Project.

Seems to me like she was harmed by someone she knew, as they say that the spare key that she hid inside a fake rock was missing. Who would know that there was a key in there unless it was someone that had been to the house before? I don't think robbery was the motive as the $400 she had in the house was still there. If it had been a random crime, the money would have been taken I bet.

Biggers believes the person who is responsible for her mother's disappearance is someone who her mother knew.

“I feel like it was someone who did work for her,” she said, adding her mother had employed a handyman to do some work for her around her home.

Neither Biggers nor anyone else with Barrick's family have approached this man about Barrick's disappearance, but Biggers said she does know the police have talked to him.

“He's in prison,” Biggers said, adding he is serving time for attempted rape and murder in Cook County, Illinois. She declined to give his name. “The state police really don't want us to give names.”

Alyne J. Lawrence Barrick was an organized woman who stuck to her routine. A widow since 1982, she lived alone in her cabin near Nolin River Lake in Edmonson County, Kentucky with her Pomeranian named Fifi. For Alyne, Friday, April 12, 1996 began like any other day.

Alyne, 61, woke up and went to a chiropractic appointment, Kentucky State Police told Dateline. After her appointment, Alyne went to a tanning salon and then stopped by the house of the handyman man she had hired. Then, according to her daughter Kaye Biggers, Alyne went home. She was supposed to spend the weekend with her brother, Pete Jackson, in Frankfort, Kentucky, but called her sister-in-law to tell her she wasn’t coming. She gave no explanation as to why.

It's doubly sad because if this handyman did this crime and couldn't be arrested for it, he then went on to harm someone else in Cook County. If this is the person it's good he's in jail for that crime but it's a crime that need not have happened.

Details of Disappearance

Barrick was last seen walking her Pomeranian dog on Laurel Ridge Road in rural Mammoth Cave, Kentucky on April 12, 1996. She had a short conversation with a local resident at approximately 2:00 p.m. She has never been heard from again.

Barrick's neighborhood mostly consisted of vacation homes; she only had two permanent neighbors. One of her neighbors reported her missing three days later, after realizing she hadn't been out to walk her dog in several days.

When the police went to Barrick's home, the lights were off and the doors were all locked, but there were indications of a struggle. A sofa in the living room was pushed out of place and the living room carpet was bloodstained. In the bedroom, the bed's fitted sheet was missing and the other bedclothes were piled on top of the mattress, bloodstained. A glass that normally sat on the nightstand was on the floor. The amount of blood present at the scene was small, not enough to indicate death.

There was no sign of Barrick. Besides her fitted bedsheet, the only other item missing from inside her home was her clutch purse. Her dentures were soaking in their container and there was a burned-out cigarette on the bathroom shelf. The lights were turned off, and Barrick's dog was locked in its crate. She normally took the trash out every evening; the bag of trash was found on top of her kitchen counter.

The $400 in cash Barrick kept in her freezer was still there, but the key she normally kept hidden in a fake rock outside her house was missing. Her truck was parked nearby with the house keys inside it, and the truck keys were inside the house. It appeared as if Barrick had been getting ready for bed when her nighttime routine had been suddenly interrupted.

Barrick is a widow and lived alone at the time of her disappearance. She enjoyed fishing and growing roses, and she is an accomplished seamstress who made her four children's clothes when they were young. She was reportedly dating a younger man, but her family didn't know the man's name.

According to her family, the fact that Barrick had taken her dentures out prior to her disappearance indicates she wasn't expecting anyone to come visit; she never let anyone see her without her dentures. In spite of this, both her loved ones and the police believe she was attacked by someone she knew. Her family suspects a handyman she had hired. This person has not been publicly named, and authorities haven't said whether he is a suspect, but they said they had a suspect, someone who left the area right after Barrick went missing.

Foul play is suspected in her case, which is being treated as a homicide. Authorities believe her body may be buried in a shallow grave in the woods near her home.

So they mention that she was hiring a handyman as well as was reportedly dating a younger man. Do many assume these individuals were the same person? Not much seems to have been reported about either one.

Sounds like she may have been involved with someone that perhaps her family wouldn't have approved of.
