KY - Rowan County clerk Kim Davis Jailed for Contempt, 2015

Well, but the visit with the nuns was a surprise visit, not a secret visit. It was reported in the news at the time it took place.

In another issue pressing on the American church, Francis was asked about the case of Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk jailed for several days after she refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples despite the Supreme Court's ruling making same-sex marriage legal nationwide. Davis said such marriages violate her Apostolic Christian faith.

Francis said he didn't know the case in detail, but he upheld conscience objection as a human right.

“It is a right. And if a person does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right,” Francis said.

So, Davis now feels justified in her reluctance to issue marriage licenses to gay couples because the Pope told her it's her right. Whatever

I'm really disappointed in the pope. I appreciate some of the things he's said, but there is no justification for visiting that hateful, bigoted publicity hound; he gives legitimacy to her actions. I no longer respect him.

7. Most of all, despite what Ms. Davis said, a meeting with the pope does not “kind of validate everything.” Again, the pope meets with many people, some of whom he may know well, others of whom may be introduced to him as a reward for long service, and perhaps others who will use a meeting to make a political point. Meeting with the pope is a great honor, but it does not betoken a blanket blessing on “everything” one does. Not to put too fine a point on it, but Pope Francis also met Mark Wahlberg, and that does not mean that he liked “Ted.”

The other six are worth reading too!

She's not even Catholic and I have a feeling her beliefs don't match up at all with Catholicism, so why is this a big deal to her?

Francis met with Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis during the pope’s visit to the United States, the Vatican confirmed on Wednesday morning.

Wow. I'm surprised. He is turning out to be a pretty complex figure. But it really has nothing to do with our Constitution or the laws of our country. Hoping for the endorsement of major religious figures is kind of the opposite of separation of church and state. The whole point is that the Pope has no say in whether we follow our Constitution. She can follow her conscience; what she is not allowed to do in this country is force others to follow her conscience when it impedes upon their civil rights as laid out in the Constitution and interpreted by the Supreme Court.

I thought Kim Davis's church doesn't think much of the Pope? But now she's validated because she thinks the Pope agrees with her?

Well, what would he have been blessing? Her divorces? Her fashion sense? Her contribution to the Catholic church, Georgia, or society in general?

Respectfully, this is written by someone who is an apologist for the pope. If the pope wanted to be critical of Kim Davis, he has had countless opportunities to do so.

There are also a million better people he could have met, or better things he could have done -- including betting on horses.

Blessing her as a child of God, as another human, as a Christian? It's the kind of things priests do. They're not all that picky, ime, about who they meet and pray for.

I have to admit it stings you would call Fr. James simply an apologist for the pope. I have a great deal of respect for him and the things he does.

It is being argued that Kim Davis is a conscientious objector and the moral equivalent of a Quaker who refuses to go to war. I think that in reality the moral equivalent of Kim Davis is someone who joins the army anyway, goes to war, and then not only refuses to shoot but tries to take the weapons from her fellow soldiers so they can't shoot either.

I've actually read many things that Fr. James as written, and he does seem like a reasonable person. Just the same, what he wrote was an apologia -- a defense of something controversial. And I agree that priests in general, and the pope in particular, do bless and minister to all sorts of people. But choosing her doesn't seem like a random act of kindness to me. The optics here are that he was appealing to his political base by using some of his invaluable time to give an audience to someone who promotes hate. Until I hear something different from the Vatican, that's how I'll be forced to see it.

I don't think she needed anything to encourage or validate her actions. She seems bent on pushing her beliefs on others in spite of the law.
The Pope may have lost the goodwill of people with this one meeting. Maybe that's why they wanted to keep it a secret.
I'm with you though....whatever. This meeting won't change my feelings or thoughts about her and her group of cross wavers. IMO

Davis' 15 minutes are up! She's a media/publicity 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 who's had her mug on my homepage (and elsewhere) far too long. As with any human being, I respect Davis' right to her opinions, but she has no right to impose her religious beliefs on others. Time for Kim Davis to do the job for which she is handsomely compensated without passing judgment on those who enter her office and without seeking media attention at every turn. Enough already :banghead:

Kentucky Governor: Kim Davis' Statements Show 'Absurdity'

by Pete Williams

Kentucky Gov. Steven Beshear, urging a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed against him by Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, says her legal claims "demonstrate the absurdity" of her position.

In court documents filed late Tuesday, Beshear argued that because he never ordered county clerks to do anything in issuing marriage licenses, her lawsuit against him has no merit.

The courtroom developments continued to unfold, as she and her lawyers disclosed that Davis met briefly with Pope Francis last week during his US visit. "He told me before he left to stay strong," she said...

Actually I believe they do match 100%. The Catholic Church opposes gay marriage, Kim Davis opposes gay marriage. I'm a little baffled why anyone would be surprised that the pope endorsed her position. They are both preaching the exact same message. If the pope doesn't defend the position of Kim Davis, then he can't defend the church's position on it.

Pope says defending traditional marriage is matter of 'human ecology'

This should not be still going on. Let her write her book from jail.

Whhhyyyy...how.....is this still going on? There are easy answers to this situation. Jail.

100%? No. In what ways do the beliefs of Pentecostal Apostolic Christians and Roman Catholics match up? In what ways do they differ? I think there are too many differences for either Kim or Pope Francis to claim the other. She's certainly not going to be receiving Communion from him, and does she even know how to pray the rosary he gave her?
