Admixture has been added - looks like he's of Baltic ancestry. I can personally speak to Baltic genealogy being incredibly difficult, I'm not shocked the DDP have hit a wall with his tree.

Baltic in Gedmatch just means broadly Eastern European... not actually Baltic. Just as Atlantic means broadly Middle European.
The distance estimates pinpoint his ancestry somewhere in Eastern Europe, very strongly so. Of course the countries are never accurate but you get a general idea.

I listened to that podcast. I note that the narrators said that the decedent had a nose that had been broken, and had healed, and that he wore a crew cut. This to me makes Ernest Stanley Slavik the most likely candidate, as his picture clearly shows a crooked nose that appears to have been broken at some point, and of course, a crew cut. It would require the coroner to have been mistaken about the height and age, but that happens some times, especially with partially or heavily decayed bodies.

Does anyone know of any good sites listing foreign born citizens missing in America? I think this might be helpful.

Doenetwork has some.

When looking at International cases, I look at Doe Network or Interpol yellow notices.

I was thinking about our guy today. I hope DDP is getting close to identification.

It looks to me like West Asian + Eastern Mediterranean + Red Sea + Northeast Africa = about a quarter of the circle and a high chance that one of his grandparents is Arab ethnicity. But I might be misreading it.

Based on his admixture and his computer enhanced picture is accurate I would think he is from the area near the Baltics perhaps Poland or Belarus. He is physically imposing. He has high flat cheekbones. Some of the tallest people in the world come from the Baltic states as well as the Netherlands, Bosnia and Belgium.

Everything about this gentleman speaks military to me: the haircut, the removal of hands to evade identification, his physique, removal of all his clothing and shoes, isolated location but no effort to conceal his body, his manner of death - two shots to the back of the head. It doesn't feel like plain old murder it feels like assassination. I know many military personnel have identifying characteristics like tattoos, old injuries, bad feet, etc. but could someone be hired because he doesn't have any of those identifiers?

Could he be a military member? Were there military bases active near that area in the 1980s? The world was in flux then with the dismantling of the Soviet Union. It started in Poland in 1988 and rolled into Bulgaria, Hungary, East Germany and Romania. I remember on Christmas Day in 1989 the Ceausescu's were executed in Romania.

Oliver North's Contra trial was on and it went to jury on April 14.

Just speculation on my part.

I would think he was probably from a Balcan State (maybe Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and won't exclude western Moldavia), but I doubt he is from Belarus or Ukraine, I think they have a different admixture. I am Russian, with 47% of Baltic admixture, 24% North Atlantic and 7% Siberian and my Oracle4 is very different from his, I think Ukrainians and Belarus people have different admixtures from Russians, but this is completely different (I would expect a bit more similarities and more local admixtures too). And in regards to his facial features, I think can be from anywhere in Europe, for us high cheekbones indicate that a person has a Native Siberian admixture, but as we can see he does not have Siberian admixture.

I checked through interpol’s yellow notices in suggested countries and didn’t have any luck. Thanks for that suggestion by the way much better than doe network for international cases.

I have to say this feels a bit professional in the extent the murderers followed through to prevent identification. I wouldn’t be surprised if the his hair cut may have been just prior to death possibly at gun point. If they would remove the hands I believe they would have done less strenuous tasks to prevent identification.

I have faith in the doe dna project please go the extra step and put your dna in GEDmatch if you haven’t already done so.

Fort Campbell KY or maybe one in NC would be closer. Maybe check out missing or AWOL military in the late 80s could bring results.

I have checked the missing military members site. Nothing sprung out at me.

Okay this is a crazy theory but what if JD was visiting from another country? It could be just like the Keith Jackson case.

I think this makes a lot of sense. I haven’t searched but I think it’s possible he is a wanted person from that time that may have fled to the US or was doing business here. From what I’ve read he had expensive dental work so along with all the other circumstances he may have been well off in his homeland, but may have become a liability to those around him. Who knows.

If he is of Ukrainian (Lviv) ancestry they might want to look north and northwest, not east. Entire districts in that area emptied into North America in the early 20th century; nearly all settled either in the mining towns of western PA/bordering areas of WV or the parklands between Winnipeg and Edmonton.

I mean, yes, you're right, that describes the majority of his genetic background. But that wasn't what I meant. I was talking about the relatively small portion that's from elsewhere.

Now that I think about it, the former Yugoslavia is a place where a lot of people had very mixed ethnic and genetic backgrounds. Bosnia would definitely fit.
