Itss easily one of the most premeditated and callously executed murders I know of.

  • #502
The reason that he can opt to be absent for the trial is that as an unconvicted person - he's regarded as innocent until proven guilty....therefore he has the right to decide against attending.
it's crappy and frustrating but we always boast about our legal system being the best in the world so hey-ho i guess

I think that should not apply to someone who has already been convicted of a violent crime against the same victim.

Some UK courts aren't set up for full wheelchair access, as I found out when called for jury service! I can imagine it's even more problematic with prisoners.

I don't think anyone should be able to opt out of appearing, but as you say, that's the system.

This specimen is a coward and is only sorry for his own self inflicted injuries I'm sure. Moo

Court rises for a short break

The jury has been given a 10-minute break.

When they come back defence barrister Phil Bradley KC will briefly outline Kyle Clifford's case.

Proceedings resume

The jury is back in court after a short afternoon break.

Clifford claims he had consensual sex with ex-girlfriend 16 days before murders

Defence barrister Phil Bradley KC says he and the prosecutor "share a duty to make the issues clear" to the jury.

He says the guilty pleas entered by Kyle Clifford mean he accepts he murdered Carol Hunt, falsely imprisoned and murdered Louise Hunt and murdered Hannah Hunt, using offensive weapons - a knife and crossbow - to commit the murders.

"Cool heads are obviously required even to assimilate that information," he tells the jury but adds that Clifford denies rape.

He says Clifford's case is that he last had sex with Louise on 23 June - the day they returned from his friend's wedding.

"Therefore, plain and simple, the central issue for you to decide is whether the scientific findings can be explained by consensual sexual activity on 23 June or by rape on 9 July," he adds.

Jury hears first of the prosecution evidence

After the prosecution opening and brief comments about the defence case, the first of the evidence is now being presented to the jury.

With much of the evidence agreed, prosecutor Alison Morgan is taking the jury through a timeline of events.

The court is hearing details of messages sent after a wedding Kyle Clifford and Louise Hunt went to in Scarborough in June 2023.

Jurors were earlier told this was the "catalyst" for their break-up.

In one message, Louise says "I feel like that was such a nasty and horrible message to send" and talks about issues in their relationship.

"This weekend you made me feel embarrassed," she says, adding she was "left feeling so belittled" and "I just felt you completely disregarded my feelings".

One message from Clifford says: "You can go and find Mr Perfect and let me know how that goes for you."

The court is hearing more messages sent between Louise Hunt and Kyle Clifford in the middle of their break-up.

In one he tells her he "unconditionally adores" her and says "I honestly thought you was the one I was going to marry".

As the court has already heard, they arranged to meet up on 24 June last year, with Hannah Hunt driving after Louise was involved in a minor car accident.

The messages continued over the following days, with Louise telling Clifford on 26 June she "can't continue".

"I owe it to myself to take some space to walk away for my own sanity and health," she says in the last messages about their relationship.

Clifford says: "I wish you all the best and take care of yourself too."

Court ends for the day

Proceedings have concluded for today, the opening day of crossbow killer Kyle Clifford's trial on one charge of rape.

The 26-year-old murdered his ex-girlfriend Louise Hunt, her sister Hannah and mother Carol - the family of BBC racing commentator - at their home in Hertfordshire last July.

He pleaded guilty to their murders in January, but denies raping Louise before he killed her.

The prosecution laid out its case against him in opening statements today, telling jurors that he raped her out of spite after she broke up with him.

The defence's case is that he had consensual sex with her 16 days before the murders on 9 July.

Our coverage from Cambridge Crown Court is ending now - scroll back through this page to read about proceedings as they happened.

He's just taking the ...., isn't he.
its ridiculous for sure. might just be too ashamed to admit it. I mean its doubtful that a G gets him anything worse than the murders so he doesnt have much to lose really. maybe in his head the denial is worth the price or hes just too ashamed that he had to to get tat from her.

I wonder in his mind he can plead guilty to murder but not rape? Is one more morally incomprehensible than the other in his mind?

morales got nothing to do with it. by admitting a rape your saying you couldnt get her with consent which to someone full of himself is admitting failure or that she wasnt attratced. to a narc thats the opposite image that they see themselves as. the murders are still an act of possession. jmo though.

He's just taking the piss, isn't he.
Yes. The forensic evidence should easily show whether she was raped that day or they had sex 16 days before.

  • #514
he's a complete bag of excrement tbf - he's trying to suggest that she would still have his dna on her for that long!

he seems to have zero backbone at all

i'm sure he'll really enjoy his time in the hospital wing of whichever of his majesty's hotels he rocks up to :)

Triple killer raped ex-girlfriend in 'act of spite', court told

The jury is told Kyle Clifford, 26, has previously pleaded guilty to murdering his former partner Louise Hunt, 25, her mother Carol Hunt, 61, and her sister Hannah Hunt, 28.

He has also admitted the false imprisonment of Louise, who was restrained, as well as having the crossbow and a 10-inch knife used in the attack.

Prosecutor Alison Morgan says he is alleged to have raped Louise, which he denies, during the "course of this prolonged incident of violence".

"It was a violent, sexual act of spite, before he then killed her," she says.

Clifford described as 'disrespectful, rude and arrogant' - with 'nasty temper'

Prosecutor Alison Morgan KC is now telling the jury about the background to the murders.

She says Louise Hunt, 25, lived at home with her family, including her sister Hannah Hunt, a beauty therapist, her mother Carol Hunt and her father, the BBC racing commentator John Hunt.

He has one surviving daughter, Amy.

Mr Hunt was working on the day of the attack, a fact that was checked by Kyle Clifford, who had searched online to see what racing events were going on.

Louise ran a dog grooming business called Groom and Glow from a pod in the garden and was described by friends as being a "caring, positive and happy person", who was "hard-working" the court hears.

Louise met Kyle Clifford on a dating website and they were in a relationship for around 18 months, which concerned her friends and family, the jury is told.

One friend said Louise told her Clifford had a "nasty temper" and sometimes "behaved in an aggressive manner", while a family member Emma Ledgard said she found him "odd", the prosecutor says.

She says Hannah Hunt told Ms Ledgard the family found him "disrespectful, rude and arrogant" and hoped the relationship would come to an end.

Ms Morgan tells jurors that the "firm rejection" of Louise ending the relationship and rebuffing his attempts to get back together "angered" Clifford and provides the "context and motive" for the attack on 9 July last year.

Clifford 'had relationships with other women'

The jury is told that Kyle Clifford hid relationships with two other women he worked with while he was with Louise Hunt, including one that was still ongoing at the time of the murders.

She broke up with him two weeks before the attack after they went to a wedding of a friend in Scarborough, the court hears.

Prosecutor Alison Morgan KC is taking jurors through a timeline, including messages sent between Louise and Clifford.

She says one of her friends, Mary Hammond, saw Clifford behaving in a "rude manner" at the event, which she saw as the "catalyst" for the break-up.

Louise ran a dog grooming business called Groom and Glow

He implied he had "slept with a number of people at the wedding, which upset Louise" and made a series of "patronising comments" to her, including about her ability to use an oven, she says.

Louise sent him a message on 23 June last year, the day they got back from the wedding, saying "we definitely need to have a conversation".

Clifford said in a string of replies he wasn't going to "take s***" from her and "I'll be damned if I ever beg someone to love me for who I am", the court hears.

Ms Morgan tells jurors the messages are relevant because they suggest they weren't together and Clifford is expected to suggest they had sex on that date.

No, I don't think so. Rape is control, that's one of the main aims of the narcissist.

Scream heard after Clifford used 'rouse' to trick his way into family home

The court hears that when Kyle Clifford arrived at the family home he got out of his car to check how many of their vehicles were parked outside.

He returned to his car to search "horse racing today" on his phone to check where BBC commentator John Hunt was.

Clifford also messaged "Sammy", a woman he was in a relationship with, to say: "Sorry Sam" before he drove closer to the address.

Jurors are now shown footage from his vehicle and doorbell cameras showing him, wearing a black tracksuit, taking a black rucksack out of the boot of his car.

Inside was the 10-inch knife, says prosecutor Alison Morgan KC, while he is carrying a white plastic bag with possessions used as a "rouse" to gain access to the house.

Clifford approached the door just after 2.30pm on 9 July and the court hears a transcript of a conversation between him and Carol Hunt, described as a "careful plan to get himself inside the address".

He says: "Hey I’m just err dropping off some of err Louise's stuff."

She asks how he is, and he replies: "I'm good thank you, what's wrong, you look like..."

Mrs Hunt replies: "I've seen a ghost."

Clifford tells her he's started therapy as they discuss the relationship with her daughter.

He then asks for a plastic bag to put the stuff - including a dressing gown and a hoody - into, begins to take off his backpack and says "Here you go" as he steps inside.

Over the next three minutes a long female scream followed by a shorter scream, banging sounds and noise of a commotion, was heard as Clifford attacked her with the knife.

Jurors are told a "thank you" card for John and Carol Hunt was later found unopened.

Inside it said "thank you so much for being a part of my life" and "your family have shown me so much love and kindness and I'm so grateful for everything".

Court breaks for lunch

The court has risen for a lunch break with the trial expected to continue at around 2pm.

The judge, Mr Justice Bennathan, tells jurors despite the "dreadful and shocking events" they must do their job "coolly and calmly".

Alison Morgan KC will continue to open the prosecution's case this afternoon.

Omg. He is straight up evil.

As he’s on trial for rape I do hope him being paralysed from the waist down is at least one form of justice.

Or because the evidence against him for the murder/false imprisonment/knife/crossbow charges is so overwhelming that he literally had no defence against them in law. Meanwhile the R charge he has at least a vague defence claiming the forensic evidence was from a consensual encounter a couple of weeks earlier. I'm not sure why they bothered using the search for video of the Wandsworth prison officer who was filmed <modsnip - inappropriate language - having sex with> an inmate as evidence against him in the trial. I think they have enough elsewhere to get the jury to convict this mug.
