Louisiana police said that they have arrested a woman after a 10-month-old was found dead at a residence during a welfare check on Monday.

According to KLFY, Broussard police officers also found a 2-year-old in critical condition.

The two children have not been publicly identified.

Why was she taking care of them? Is she their grandmother? She looks rough for 49 years old. This is horrible.
I found out some information about the caretaker but can't find a link that's not behind a pay wall. Will check later.

Grandmother arrested for infant death in Broussard suffered from mental illness, court records show

From your link -
"I called the police just for a welfare check," Hebert said in a phone interview with The Advocate. "I never expected anything like this. Ever."

The older of her sons was slowly improving at a hospital on Wednesday afternoon. He was suffering from severe malnutrition and dehydration when he arrived at the hospital, Hebert said.

It remains unclear how the infant died. Hebert said she received a call from the coroner's office Wednesday and was told his manner of death was ruled a homicide. The cause of death remains under investigation.

Court records show that Tammy Clause suffered from mental illness after serving in Iraq and eventually lost full custody of her two sons in 2009.

(…)

When she returned home from the war, Cory Clause asked to be awarded sole custody of the two children, court records showed. In September 2007, the father said that Tammy Clause suffered from mental illness and did not always take her medication as prescribed.

He also claimed that she did not always provide “proper supervision of the minor children.”

The woman who was arrested apparently had mental health issues exacerbated by her experience serving in Iraq (2003-07). The father of the deceased/critically injured children must be one of TC’s sons, who’d be in their 20s now.

TC lost custody of her own sons in 2009 as a result of neglectful/potentially dangerous behavior around her sons; her ex -husband claimed “she did not always provide ‘proper supervision of the minor children’” and he “mentioned an episode that occurred one night when the mother lost track of the children for two hours, and she had no idea where they were. The mother also allowed a man who lived in her neighborhood to spend the night with the older son, court records showed.” That older son apparently began “acting out” after these creepy sleepovers (creep-overs?) and had to be admitted to a facility to treat his mental health issues.

I know many people are desperate for child care, which is hard to come by and even harder to afford, and thus may turn to any port in a storm, no matter how questionable, just to be able to go to work/make ends meet, and I’m certainly not here to judge those folks for doing what they have to in order to keep their dependents fed, clothed, and housed. Nonetheless, I wonder if TC’s son (who had first-hand experience with his mother’s version of “child care”) actually consented to this child care arrangement, or if this was something arranged without his input, say by TC and the mother of the children (especially if the children’s parents are separated/not together).

Throw away the key.

Hoping the surviving child will get good care and recover. Failures on several levels contributed to this horrible situation.
Who left these children with her? No visits to check on the little ones? WTH?

Oh, these precious little gifts -- and we see such nightmares that are real. SMH.

From reading the links, I thought TC's daughter left the grandkids with her, but I am not 100% on that.

The article refers only to TC’s “two sons” born in 1994 and 1998, no mention of a daughter. That’s why I assumed the mother of these 2 children must be an in-law or quasi in-law since the article refers to TC as the childrens’ grandmother.

You are correct. The grandchildren were often left with this grandmother by RH, the mother of the two grandchildren, according to the above-linked articles.

“After eight days of no calls or texts from Clause and several phone calls to police, Hebert made the two-hour drive from Denham Springs to Clause’s home in Broussard.”

Where are the police reports from those welfare checks?

It was only a two hour drive? What the heck?!

Snipped from this article & BBM:

The children’s mother, RH, says she hopes Clause spends the rest of her life in prison. Hebert says her infant son died of malnutrition and dehydration. When police found the children, she says her 2-year-old son was also hours away from death. Broussard Police say it appears the two children were not given food or water for over a week.

H says she dropped her 10-month old son and 2-year-old son off at their grandmother’s house on Mother’s Day. After eight days of no calls or texts from Clause and several phone calls to police, H made the two-hour drive from Denham Springs to Clause’s home in Broussard.

[...]

She says she’ll never forget what a detective told her when the children’s grandmother, Tammy Clause, was arrested hours later. “He looked at Tammy and arrested her, told her the charges of second degree murder and second degree cruelty to a juvenile, and all she said was, ‘Okay.’ That is literally all she said, no remorse whatsoever,” Hebert added.

---

WTH??? No food or water for over a week??? These poor babies, I can't even imagine.

Did the police go to the house for a welfare check and verified the children were in good health?
Or did the grandmother not answer the door?

Found this case here in related posts... seems like posting on this case stopped abruptly with no further updates. Were any more details ever reported?

just found this case and I have questions, the primary of which is - Why were the two year old and an infant left in this grandmother's care two hours from their own home? What was happening in the mother's life that having her baby daddy's mom, with a history of abuse/neglect against her baby daddy, seemed a good option?

most recent update I can find was this. Article is behind a paywall but the headline seems to indicate she was committed in August of 2023 after a court ordered mental health evaluation:

yes yes.... as I kept reading the earlier posts in this case...I just kept thinking as ill as grandmother was... how and why were these kids left in her care in the first place??? the mother, RH, tried to call for over 8 days????

8 days of unanswered phone calls and nobody physically went to see what the heck was wrong? All I can think is that the children's mother did not have transportation of her own maybe? It was a two hour drive. Not twenty. Not blaming mom just confused about the entirety of the circumstance in this one.
