Eleven adult men escaped from a New Orleans jail on Friday and should be considered armed and dangerous, officials with the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office warned.

One of the inmates, Kendall Myles, has been apprehended in the French Quarter, a tourist hot spot less than 3 miles from the Orleans Justice Center, the Louisiana State Police said.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said a "group of people" believed to be victims of the inmates were immediately removed from their homes and "taken to safety." She appealed to witnesses of the inmates' crimes to do the same.

Kirkpatrick said its "more than likely" the inmates had help and have changed out of their jail clothes.

Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson said the men were able to get out of the Orleans Justice Center because of “defective locks.” Hutson said she has continuously raised concerns about the locks to officials and, as recently as this week, advocated for money to fix the ailing infrastructure.

“We do acknowledge there is no way people can get out of this facility without there being some type of lapse in security,” Hutson said of the jail, where she says 1,400 people are being held. “It’s almost impossible, not completely, but almost impossible for anybody to get out of this facility without help.”

The cameras that captured the escape are several of about 900 at the facility, authorities said. On the night of the escape, a corrections monitoring technician, a civilian, was monitoring Pod 1D. Civilians are assigned to those roles when deputies aren't available, officials said. When the technician stepped away from the monitor to eat, the inmates escaped by slipping through the damaged pipe chase area at the rear of the cell.

Hutson, her deputy corrections chief, Jeworski “Jay” Mallett and her spokesperson, Casey McGee, said investigators suspected someone inside inside the Sheriff's office may have aided in the escape.

He added that some fixtures were removed and that he did not believe it could be removed from inside the facility.

Hutson also faced questions about a purported delay in her reporting of the escape, both to law enforcement and the public.

Hutson’s office issued its first public alert at 10:50 a.m., well over two hours after the escape was first discovered.

According to the original article, they broke out of the prison around 1 AM, after the person monitoring the cameras for their 'pod' went to get something to eat. Their absence wasn't discovered until the 8:30 AM head-count. Does this mean that the cameras don't show the interior of the pods? I assume that if they did, that the technician might have noticed that their beds were empty when he or she returned?

Then they didn't notify the NOLA police of the breakout until 10:30 AM, even though New Orleans would be a likely destination. Two of the guys that they re-caught were apprehended there.

This is, of course, a very serious matter, considering that some of these dudes have been accused of murder. But I'm not gonna lie: the sheriff's insinuation that the escape might have been the result of a political dirty trick borders on the hilarious.

How did they know the civilian monitoring the camera had "stepped away". Was it just an amazingly lucky coincidence for them? Or was that camera actually very rarely monitored in reality ...
