LA- 11 inmates escape from Orleans jail, including multiple accused murderers. May 16, 2025

In a news conference on Sunday, (Louisiana Governor) Landry ordered an audit of the Orleans Correctional Facility by the Department of Corrections.

The audit would remove all DOC inmates and check the basic jail guidelines in the jail.
(…)
Landry also issued an executive order that would instruct the state inspector general to get inventory from the sheriff on all pretrial detainees and those awaiting sentences.
(…)
Landry also discussed the courts and judges issuing an executive order asking the new Judiciary Commission to establish triggers for investigation by them for high crimes in places such as New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Rapides and Caddo Parish.

The executive order will mandate the commission to specify specific review triggers, including reviewing the number of judge trials and acquittal rates in criminal court.

WDSU Investigative Anchor, Travers Mackel, reported on the concerns surrounding a New Orleans judge handling an unusually large number of judge trials and not using a jury to render a verdict.
(…)
Landry stated that a request to the Louisiana Supreme Court was made for an in-depth review of the Orleans Criminal Court System.

The seven fugitives still at-large are:
  • Derrick Groves, convicted of a 2018 Mardi Gras mass shooting. Officials are concerned he may target trial witnesses.
  • Antoine Massey, held on domestic abuse and vehicle theft; wanted in St. Tammany Parish for kidnapping and rape; has a history of escapes.
  • Gary Price, charged with attempted first-degree murder and domestic abuse.
  • Lenton VanBuren, Jermaine Donald, and Corey Boyd, all facing second-degree murder charges.
  • Leo Tate, a felon convicted in federal court for firearm possession.
Authorities say the men should be considered armed and dangerous.

State Police Superintendent Col. Robert Hodges confirmed, “We are confident at this time that we have actual intelligence on all seven of those fugitives. We hope that in the coming days, if not the coming hours, that we have them all apprehended.”

I can't imagine the fear the victims, witnesses, and their families are experiencing right now. Praying all of the escapees are caught soon, that any "helpers" are held responsible, and that this jail/prison is brought up to appropriate standards.

“These inmates are accused of serious crimes and until they are back in custody we should all remain vigilant,” said New Orleans FBI Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Tapp

“These are violent criminals,” said Louisiana State Police Colonel Robert Hodges.
Hodges says the safety of citizens is a top priority.

“We are here to protect everyone in the city of New Orleans and everyone in the state and of course our federal partners to ensure that everyone is taken care of outside of Louisiana,” said Hodges

A maintenance worker named Sterling Williams was booked on principal to simple escape and malfeasance in office in connection with the Orleans Jail inmate escape. Sources tell WDSU Williams said he was forced to help the inmates. https://tinyurl.com/4mumvh9p

He should be charged with any crimes these inmates commit while being out also. If they rob a store, he gets charged also. I mean what the heck was he thinking?

The worker, Sterling Williams, 33, admitted to agents that he turned off the water supply to a cell at the request of one of the inmates, Murrill said in a statement on Tuesday. That allowed the escapees to tear a sink and toilet off the wall, creating a hole through which they fled.

It would have taken the prisoners time, after the water was shut off, to rip those fixtures from the walls. I highly doubt Mr. Williams was under threat from a shank that whole time. at the very least, if he felt his life was endangered he could have done what he was told til they moved on to the next phase of their big escape plan and then alerted guards but it sounds as if that didn't happen. So even IF we give Sterling the benefit of the doubt, he did nothing to prevent this, which in essence is aiding and abetting escape.
