According to police in Hammond, La., officers were first alerted to an incident taking place at Tangipahoa Alternative School at around 7:30 a.m. local time on April 14, after a student refused to get out of his father's car in the drop-off line.

After speaking with a police officer and school officials, the boy's father decided to take him home, Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron said at a news conference, per WVUE.

Bergeron said that as the car began to pull away from the school's driveway, "a shot rang out," and the SUV crashed into a house across the street.

The 13-year-old then walked toward the school's entrance with a weapon before being detained by a police officer.

Authorities said a 5-year-old child was also inside the car at the time of the incident, and the boy's father was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, per WVUE.

Authorities said it was unclear where the teen got the gun and why he chose to shoot his father.

“Sometimes, when evil things are going to happen, they just happen,” Bergeron said. “We can do the best we can to stop them. I believe our lieutenant’s actions today could have stopped something much worse.
