Deceased suspect accused in deadly mass shooting of 8 children identified by police

Police have now identified the man reportedly responsible for shooting and killing eight children and injuring two women in a domestic incident in Shreveport’s Cedar Grove neighborhood Sunday morning (April 19).

Police say Shamar Elkins is the man responsible for this incident. Additionally, police say Elkins was the father of seven of the eight children he reportedly shot and killed. One of the children killed was not his though. A ninth child reportedly jumped off the roof of the home and was able to get away. It’s unclear right now if that child was injured.

I wonder if he was on his way to shoot more people. Bossier, where he was shot by law enforcement, is across the Red River from Shreveport.

dreadful, seems as though he killed all his children and tried to kill their mother and another woman, one can't imagine the horror in that home, and LE, crime scene, paramedics, the staff from the ME office and medical examiner now have to investigate and deal with the aftermath, I think one child escaped by jumping off a roof, am not sure if this child was related to him

I took a peek at his Facebook. The kids aren’t all smiling in those group pictures but I wouldn’t read too much into that. It can’t be easy to even get that many little kids to sit still long enough for a photo and they may not want to sit still for it. Then the outdoor photo is in bright sun and they’re all squinting.

Obviously now in retrospect something was very very wrong, but idk if the photos tell that story.

Question, were all 8 children his? Were all of the victims his children? He appears to have had at least 7 kids who were in that age range but I saw mention of a niece/ nephew also.

I've read that seven out of the eight killed were his.

This is beyond tragic. IMO-it sounds like the suspect killed his own children as well as some visiting and also shot other adult family. They are forever safe with Jesus now.

In parallel, as a staunch advocate for tougher penalties for crimes against animals, children, elderly, and the otherwise defenseless, I want to remind everyone that while we pray for the repose of these souls in heaven, we also know they are forever dead, forever buried, taken through an unspeakable act of evil.

These children will never have a first date, a first kiss, go to a prom, get their first job, their first car, or graduate. These children will never become doctors who save lives, astronauts that go to the moon, fall in love and walk down the aisle, or become devoted parents. They will never know the joy of holding their first grandchild, or watching them repeat the cycle of life.

As a society, we need to stop the revolving door of the jails and return to penalties and prison systems that are so severe, that it's a true deterrent to crime. I will caveat this by saying this does not include those with profound mental illness. That's a whole other discussion. My sincere prayers to the families of those murdered and now dead forever. As for the Perp? Let their name be forgotten, and let them answer to their maker.

The article literally labels him a 'former army national guardsman' in the first sentence. The word army is right there. I didn't invent it. The word army is littered throughout the article, including a direct quote from an Army official about his service.
