Trafficking in Jackson is a real issue. It seems to me that there have been several cases that initially are suspect that just quietly disappear. I'm not sure why. I hope it means that there are bigger fish on a hook some where, but I admit that it seems less likely. I can say this. JPD is down man power and I heard a statistic from a retired JPD homicide detective just last week. He said that the force is now smaller than when he started in 1975. That is a huge problem. He also said they are undertrained and there are no real investigations going on. They show up, snap some photos and that is all. So, unless another agency comes in and takes it over it just stalls.
Replying to my own post to add that since I originally posted this the Hinds Co. DA has been indicted just last week on federal bribery charges. It goes deeper than that, though, and now we're all wondering who will prosecute these cases.

Owens is stating he won’t step down. Not sure how this will all play out, but I’m confident there are remedies through the State OAG if it comes to that. It’s not like local cases will stagnate and fail to move forward for prosecution while Owens case is being adjudicated.

What an ugly, messy, scandal. The feds have him dead to rights, recorded exchanges of cash bribes. He won’t survive this, no way. Owens needs to be convicted, disbarred, and receive a long sentence in federal prison. Abuse of this kind needs harsh punishment.

I'm confident that our AG office will step in and step up but they have been in a constant fight with this mayoral administration in Jackson. Now we know why.

I posted the most recent update I could find about Callihan on the prior page, couldn't find anything current on Cox?

In case anyone is interested.
Seems nothing new out there for VC - still in custody, and her trial has been scheduled for 3/24/25.

JACKSON, Miss. —

A woman charged in the death of a 4-year-old girl in Jackson will stand trial next year.

Victoria Cox is charged with capital murder, kidnapping and sexual battery charges. Hinds County Circuit Court Judge Winston Kidd set a trial date for March 24, 2025 at 11 am.

In addition to the federal charges, Callihan also faces state charges in both Mississippi and Louisiana — where he could receive the death penalty if convicted.

Meanwhile, the grand jury indicted Cox, who is scheduled to go on trial on March 24 in Jackson, for one count of capital murder, one count of kidnapping and one count of sexual battery. Cox pleaded not guilty to all three charges. She also could face the death penalty if convicted.

Victoria Cox attended a pretrial conference on Tuesday in Hinds County Circuit Court. She is charged with capital murder, kidnapping and sexual battery. Cox and Daniel Callihan were arrested in Jackson in June 2024. They are accused of kidnapping two girls from Loranger, Louisiana, after their mother, Callie Brunett, was killed.

Cox’s trial, which was set to begin March 24, was continued to allow attorneys to gather more information from agencies involved in the investigation that spans two states. Cox was seen crying after leaving court on Tuesday

In Louisiana, Callihan has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping of a child and second-degree kidnapping. Cox was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping of a child, second-degree kidnapping and accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. Callihan was extradited to Louisiana.

According to court documents, the jury trial for Callihan has been set for March 10, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. in New Orleans, Louisiana

Daniel Callihan, accused of murdering a Loranger woman and her daughter, is scheduled to appear in federal court in New Orleans on Friday. The hearing will assess his competency to stand trial.

Callihan, 36, faces multiple charges across Louisiana and Mississippi, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, and federal charges of kidnapping with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.

Judge Lance Affrick ruled that Daniel Callihan needs further psychiatric evaluation before he can stand trial in his federal kidnapping case connected to the murders and kidnapping of a Loranger mother and her two children.

He is also facing capital murder and sexual battery charges in Mississippi.
