A New Orleans man arrested in December on four rape charges is now accused in a fifth rape and kidnapping, according to arrest records.

Daniel Meridy, 34, also suspected in three sexual assaults in Kansas City, Mo., was rebooked Wednesday (Feb. 20) with additional charges of first-degree rape and aggravated kidnapping, Orleans Parish court records show.

Meridy’s new charges stem from a June rape and kidnapping in Central City ...

The attacks have occurred in various parts of New Orleans — Central City, Mid-City and Treme — often in areas associated with prostitution. He used either a knife or gun in each attack, police say.

Orleans Magistrate Judge Harry Cantrell set Meridy’s bond at $1.6 million for the four attacks. Orleans Magistrate Judge Robert Blackburn on Wednesday set Meridy’s bond at $400,000 for the new charges, raising his total bond to $2 million.

Meridy’s next court hearing is scheduled for March 20.

when i lived in new orleans, i witnessed (through the crack in my back door) a man using a crow bar very quickly break into my adjacent neighbor's window. i was standing so close to him i could smell him. (no joke). i was petrified but managed to call 911. when the cops showed up, the guy was in her apartment (luckily she was not home), and he tried jumping off the back balcony to escape police. i got called in to testify against this man who had been charged for burglary, armed robbery, and about a million other things 9 TIMES, and was still on the streets. if i had testified, he would have been facing life in prison. when they cuffed him after the break-in, the police marched him RIGHT in front of me, so he not only saw what i looked like, but knew where i lived. i had to MOVE from that beloved apartment out of fear that if he DIDN'T get charged and stay in jail, for the 10th time, he'd come back for me/my apartment. new orleans needs to get it together ffs. it's a damn shame they let criminals back out on the street, but i'm sure it's an over-crowding issue, too. i eventually had to leave nola bc it just got too dangerous to live a normal life. i miss it madly.
