I hope we actually learn motive or at least the connection (if there was any) between the victims and why he chose them. It's so crazy! I'm so impressed with LE and how quickly they were able to catch this guy. He confessed when taken into custody and apparently they have lots of physical evidence.

Accused Louisiana Serial Killer Won't Face Death Penalty

"(BATON ROUGE, La.) — Louisiana prosecutors aren’t seeking the death penalty against a suspect charged with killing three men and wounding a fourth in a string of shootings last year...

Sharpe is charged with first-degree murder in the Oct. 9 shooting of Boy Scouts employee Brad DeFranceschi, who was gunned down while trimming weeds in front of his house. DeFranceschi lived on Boy Scouts camp property in Clinton, a town of 1,600 people about 30 miles northeast of Baton Rouge.

The charges that he faces in the other three shootings aren’t punishable by a death sentence.

Sharpe is charged with second-degree murder in the July 8 shooting of 62-year-old Tommy Bass, who was killed in the carport of his home. He is charged with attempted first-degree murder in the Sept. 12 shooting of 47-year-old Buck Hornsby, who was wounded while exercising on his property. And he is charged with second-degree murder in the Sept. 19 killing of 66-year-old Carroll Breeden, who was shot to death while doing yard work in front of his home in East Baton Rouge Parish.

D’Aquilla said he based his decision on several factors, including the “very time-consuming” nature of capital murder cases. He said he expects Sharpe’s attorneys to challenge his “mental capacity” to stand trial.

“We don’t want to get into a lengthy battle with that,” D’Aquilla said....

Sharpe’s trial in East Feliciana Parish is tentatively set to start on Aug. 27, but Damico said he expects it to be postponed."

Alleged East Feliciana serial killer found incompetent to stand trial, judge rules

"A judge in East Feliciana ruled Tuesday that alleged serial killer Ryan Sharpe is not competent to stand trial, a decision that will halt criminal proceedings and transfer the 37-year-old from a jail cell to a psychiatric hospital.

Reports from two doctors who evaluated Sharpe's mental capacity found that, at this time, he is unable to assist counsel, said his attorney, Tommy Damico. The doctors did not make a determination on Sharpe's mental status at the time of the crimes, Damico said. ...

East Feliciana District Attorney Sam D'Aquilla said his case against Sharpe is now on hold following the ruling. Doctors will continue to monitor and evaluate Sharpe at the Forensic Division of the Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson.

"We can't do anything right now," D'Aquilla said. "When doctors say he's competent, then we'll start moving with the proceedings." .."

A third doctor appointed by the 19th Judicial District has ruled accused serial killer Ryan Sharpe incompetent to stand trial at a competency hearing Wednesday.

Defense attorneys for Sharpe expect the Judge to give a final ruling on Sharpe’s competency on January 30.

A judge announced that 37-year-old Ryan Sharpe isn’t able to competently assist his attorney in a trial over the slaying of a former BREC commissioner.

Sharpe has already been ruled incompetent to stand trial in the other slayings. Court records say he told authorities he killed the men to fill government-issued hunting “tags” and would’ve finished filling the tags if not for his arrest.

"Doctors have declared accused serial killer Ryan Sharpe mentally fit to stand trial, but his attorney said he’s considering an insanity defense because his client can’t recall anything about the crimes he’s accused of committing.

The 37-year-old Clinton man previously pleaded not guilty to all the charges filed against him in East Baton Rouge and East Feliciana parishes for fatally shooting three men and wounding a fourth. But lawyer Tommy Damico said he’s not ruling out a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

“It’s something we’re considering at this point,” he said.

Sharpe was returned over the weekend to East Baton Rouge Parish Prison from a state mental facility, where doctors determined he can now move forward with his criminal cases, Damico said....

Damico said he will argue at a court hearing, which will be held within the next 30 days, that Sharpe is not competent to assist his lawyers....

"....In late May, Kelley awarded $2.5 million in wrongful death damages to Breeden's widow, D'Ann Watson Breeden, and a combined $2.5 million in wrongful death damages to his five children.

The judge also awarded $500,000 to Breeden's wife for mental anguish and emotional distress; $100,000 in survivor damages; and about $12,000 for funeral expenses...

Damico, who represents Sharpe only in the criminal cases, questioned how a default judgment could be entered against someone who is mentally incompetent.

"If they served him and he's incompetent, I don't know how they could get a default judgment," Damico said. "The competency of the client was certainly pending."

As for the $5.6 million judgment, Damico said Sharpe "does not have that kind of money." The attorney also said Sharpe doesn't have insurance to cover the judgment....."

"CLINTON - A man accused of killing three people in multiple parishes has been found competent to assist his own legal defense in East Baton Rouge.

On Thursday, Department of Health doctors restored Ryan Sharpe's competency in the murder of BREC Commissioner Caroll Breeden. Breeden was shot and killed while standing in the front yard of his Zachary home in 2017.

Sharpe has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in that killing....

In January, Judge Trudy White found Sharpe incompetent to stand trial in East Baton Rouge. He was previously declared incompetent in East Feliciana as well and transferred to a state mental health treatment facility.

Doctors will again evaluate Sharpe's mental state, with the results of those examinations due in May."

"Alleged serial killer Ryan Sharpe, facing a trial in the 2017 slaying of a former BREC commissioner, was declared capable to aid in his defense Thursday by a Baton Rouge judge who had earlier this year deemed him unable to do so.

State District Judge Trudy White found Sharpe competent to assist his attorneys after doctors at the state mental hospital in Jackson issued reports stating he is mentally fit to stand trial on a second-degree murder charge in the killing of 66-year-old Carroll Breeden in September 2017 in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Sharpe, 37, of Clinton, also is charged in East Feliciana Parish with second-degree murder in the fatal July 2017 shooting of Thomas Bass, 62, and first-degree murder in the shooting death of Brad DeFranceschi, 48, in October 2017.

Sharpe, who pleaded not guilty early last year in the Breeden killing, entered a dual plea Thursday of not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity.

"EAST BATON ROUGE- A sanity hearing for an alleged serial killer has been delayed once again.

During a hearing Tuesday for Ryan Sharpe, doctors asked for more time to determine if Sharpe was in his right mind when he gunned down BREC Park Commissioner Caroll Breeden in 2017.

His continuance hearing is set for September 11. Court documents say the ruling has been delayed 10 times.

Sharpe previously pleaded not guilty because of insanity in the shooting death of Breeden.

Earlier this year, Sharpe also pleaded not guilty for the death of Brad DeFranceschi and Thomas Bass in East Feliciana Parish. Sharpe allegedly killed both men at their homes around the same time Breeden was killed."

"BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The family of a former BREC commissioner celebrated in court Wednesday. After months of hearings and delays, a trial date for Carroll Breeden’s accused killer has been set.

Ryan Sharpe, accused of killing Breeden in East Baton Rouge Parish and three other men in East Feliciana Parish, was found to be sane at the time of the killings by court-appointed doctors.

Sharpe will face an East Baton Rouge Parish jury for the murder of the former BREC commissioner on March 2, 2020.

Earlier this year, Sharpe was found competent to stand trial.

Breeden was killed while working in his yard in 2017. His family has not missed a court date yet and say they’re glad the case is finally moving forward.
