I suspect Zavala was killed the day he went missing or shortly after. The truck belonging to the person Zavala was with (Guadalupe Pacheco), was found days later and there was a pool of blood in the bed of the truck, confirmed by DNA to be Zavala's.

Our JD had a recognizable face and most likely died the day he was a found.
