I wonder if the star design in the tooth cap was a symbol for something. Gang affiliation, family lineage, or just ascetics.

I wonder if the caps on his teeth were for genuine dental reasons or aesthetic reasons.
I've seen star 'tooth jewelry' before- Usually it's a small metal or gemstone design that's bonded onto the tooth with dental adhesive. From looking into it, it seems like they can be done at either a dentist's office or a tattoo parlor. Not sure about the full silver cap with the star design, though. If it's more of a 'grill' than an actual dental cap, it could be that it wasn't even done at a dentist... One of the tattoo shops I found that did tooth jewelry also did grills.
