Hundreds of people are missing and thousands more have been left homeless after a dam collapsed in south-east Laos, releasing a vast body of water that engulfed six villages. The official Laos News Agency reported the hydroelectric dam, under construction in the Attapeu province, had collapsed on Monday evening, causing flash flooding that has left more than 6,600 people without shelter.

The Attapeu dam was being built by Xe Pian-Xe Namnoy Power Company (PNPC), a joint venture led by South Korean companies, with Thai and Lao partners, and was meant to start commercial operations next year.
