Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Department has released a list of seventeen people missing since the wildfires that devastated Los Angeles.

They are actively seeking the public's help in finding these people.

The vast majority of the people on this list are elderly, and of the four youngest (49 - 56), one is not ambulatory.

A total of thirty one people are currently unaccounted for since the fires.

Goodness where do you even start
Well, they started the moment the ashes got cool enough. The forensic teams are literally sifting everything that's left behind to find them. There are many reasons residents aren't being let in to much of the areas right now, and a lot of that is public safety, but a lot is that there are certainly human remains that have yet to be identified and recovered, and fire damaged remains can be hard to spot and even harder to recover if they burned hot enough. They are literally grid searching entire neighbourhoods with all the rigours of a single crime scene, compounded by dangerous terrain, toxic ash, hot spots, and the ruins of thousands of buildings covering the people they're searching for fragments of.

A lot of these folks probably didn't make it out. Many were elderly, most are aged from their seventies to nineties. One of the younger ones, Carolyn, couldn't leave her bed without help, and has been confirmed deceased just now. At least one is known to have dementia, one needs regular dialysis, one has a heart condition requiring medication. Kim we know was healthy and spry enough but refused to leave when a friend wanted to help her get out, so it can be presumed she died without leaving.

I think the best that we can hope for is that a handful are out there in shelters and don't realise that they're listed amongst the missing.

Miva Friedli has been added to this article listing the deceased. (Note that I got the format of her name wrong in my list above, for which I apologise. It should have been Miva WHEATLEY FRIEDLI. But the article for the missing alert had it wrong, too.)

Miva diagnosed with dementia, according to the alert. The missing alert lists her age as 93, and this article lists it as 86. I don't know which, if either, is correct.

Miva was one of the 'beloved aunts' of a large extended family. Relatives tried to get to her home when the fire approached, but couldn't reach her.

I noticed there isn't a person on your list that isn't under 40 years old

No, the youngest on this list is 49.

That doesn't mean that there aren't any young people missing. The last I heard, a total of thirty one people were unaccounted for. But there are none on this list.

The two youngest known victims of the fires were both young men living with cerebral palsy. Age and physical disability both seem to have impacted the ability of certain residents to evacuate safely.

Two more victims of the Eaton fire have been named. One of them was on the list of seventeen.

Ninety four year old Edwin Cridland, who was remembered as 'a kind soul' by his friend of thirty four years.

Oswald "Ozzie" Gerhard Altmetz, 75, who lived his whole life in Altadena after his family came to the US from Germany. Ozzie's stepdaughter says that they are struggling to formally identify Ozzie because of the condition of his remains. She remembers his love for jazz music and his deep abiding love for his pets.

Diana Elizabeth Webb, 82, has been named a victim of the Palisades fire. Diana was on the list of seventeen at risk missing issued days ago. She had not had contact with her family since two days before the fire.

These aren't some of the missing, but I did want to post this because it was so uplifting in regards to those some would think are missing.

It was the early morning on Jan. 10, Oregon firefighters’ first day on the line fighting the massive Palisades fire in Southern California that went on to burn thousands of acres, scorch countless buildings and kill nearly a dozen people.

The Douglas County strike team, assigned to extinguish hotspots in the Palisades neighborhood on the western edge of Los Angeles, made its way through deserted streets. The team – part of the 370 firefighters sent from every corner of Oregon to California – didn’t know what to expect, having driven down in their rigs from Oregon the night before.

The area was under evacuation, with homes burned to the ground and trees and vegetation scorched.

Strike team leader Mark Hernandez and assistant strike team leader Kevin Comstock drove to the foothills to explore harder to reach areas. When they came to a ridge where the road was blocked by downed power poles and power lines, they set out on foot.

At a ridge top, they spotted a home still intact and were shocked to find an elderly woman sitting in a chair in the front yard, said Hernandez, whose usual job is battalion chief with the Central Douglas Fire & Rescue out of Winston.

The two firefighters learned the woman and her husband had been without food, water or communication for several days, then went to check on the husband in the backyard.

“We noticed right away that he had burns on his arms, hands and legs and we knew it was more than first-degree, it was probably second- or third-degree burns,” Hernandez told The Oregonian/OregonLive this week from California. “We knew we needed to get him out of there, one way or another.”

Hernandez and Comstock called for an ambulance and worked with another strike team to carry the man along the block road in a rescue basket. They also called the couple’s family to let them know the two were safe and then stayed at their home to put out hotspots.

“Our main goal is saving lives and we actually had an opportunity to help somebody out that was still there, that was trapped and didn’t have a way out,” Hernandez said. “It was a pretty good find and I’m glad we were able to get him out and get him the treatment that he needed.”
