Large explosion rocks port in Beirut, cause unclear

Videos on social media appear to show a huge blast by a port in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

A large explosion rocked the port area of Lebanon's capital, Beirut, on Tuesday.

Images and videos on social media appear to show large plumes of smoke and damaged buildings, but the cause of the blast and exact location are not immediately clear...

Could this be a reason?

A large blast has hit the Lebanese capital, Beirut, ahead of the verdict in a trial over the killing of ex-PM Rafik Hariri in 2005.

That definitely wasn't fireworks. I've been searching trying to find an explosion that looks like that and cant
Me neither. Unless it was some sort of munitions storage location, I’m at a loss. I’ve never seen anything like it.

That's the the only thing I can think of. The only thing somewhat similar is a MOAB explosion but where would they get their hands on one of those?

That is one bizarre-looking explosion. I echo what drama_farmer said above:

I’ve never seen anything like it.

I think the water may be making it look stranger than it would otherwise look. It’s still incredibly powerful, but that water vapor may be misleading.

It certainly doesn’t make search and recovery efforts any easier, now that night has fallen.

''Beirut, Lebanon - Hundreds of people have been wounded in a powerful explosion that ripped through Lebanon's capital, Beirut, according to the country's health minister.

The massive explosion on Tuesday at Beirut's port caused widespread damage to buildings, shattering windows in different parts of the city. It sent shockwaves across the capital.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.

Hamad Hassan, Lebanon's health minister, said hundreds were wounded in the explosion''

''Video of the incident taken by Al Jazeera shows a large column of smoke billowing from an area of the port that houses large warehouses before a large orange explosion is seen and huge dome-shaped blast wave shoots into the air.''

Lebanese officials are now saying it was caused by a container of sodium nitrate.

Beirut explosions: Many feared dead in 'national disaster akin to Hiroshima' - latest news and video
''Beirut explosions: Many feared dead in 'national disaster akin to Hiroshima''
"I saw a fireball and smoke billowing over Beirut. People were screaming and running, bleeding. Balconies were blown off buildings. Glass in high-rise buildings shattered and fell to the street," said a Reuters witness.

''Video shared online the moment an enormous explosion erupted near the Beirut waterfront, sending an immense shockwave tearing through downtown neigbhourhoods. Moments before a fire could be seen burning at the base of a billowing grey tower of smoke apparently from an initial explosion near the port area.

Local media showed images of blooded people trapped under rubble following the explosion, the cause of which was not immediately clear.

Hospitals called for blood donations and the Lebanese Red Crescent sent out an alert to paramedics, calling on them to rush to dispatch centres.''
