:drumroll::drumroll::drumroll: Led Zeppelin Wins ‘Stairway to Heaven’ Copyright Trial

The courtroom did echo with victory for Led Zeppelin on Wednesday, as a jury of eight people determined that the group did not rip off the 1968 Spirit song "Taurus" while writing their signature 1971 anthem "Stairway to Heaven."

Led Zeppelin cleared of stealing riff for Stairway to Heaven

Los Angeles jury finds Robert Plant and Jimmy Page did not steal the most famous passage from the 1971 anthem from the band Spirit

Led Zeppelin has defeated a lawsuit that accused the band of stealing the opening riff in Stairway to Heaven, and cemented its place in rock’s pantheon.

A jury in Los Angeles on Thursday cleared Robert Plant and Jimmy Page of pinching arguably the most famous riff of the most famous anthem in rock.

The singer and guitarist were in the US district court for the climax of a six-day trial that gripped the music industry and put the band’s history and credibility under a forensic microscope.

i think its very likely that jimmy page heard taurus and used it, whether consciously or not, as inspiration for that segment of stairway, but from what i read of the trial i dont think it was proven substantially enough, and im not sure that it rises to the level of infringement regardless.

Court orders new trial over claim that Led Zeppelin stole 'Stairway to Heaven' - Los Angeles Times

A federal appeals court decided unanimously Friday to overturn a jury’s decision that the British rock band Led Zeppelin did not copy another band in making the hit “Stairway to Heaven.”

A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decided a new trial was needed because the judge who presided over a 2016 trial had given erroneous and prejudicial instructions to the jury.

It's kind of funny, and I do like most Led Zeppelin, but their hard-rock songs. Never really cared for "Stairway to Heaven" even though my older brother did have Led Zeppelin IV LP - the cover with the old guy carrying a tied bundle of sticks on his back. I do like the more Celtic-sounding "Battle of Evermore", too.

I have both albums as well (still)! and no way no how do I hear the steal. Gee whiz. Let sleeping black dogs lie :drumroll:
There is a similar sound, similar tone, but do I think it was Plagiarism? nope.

I don't get this lawsuit. I would think a song would have to be fairly similar to be "stolen". There only seems to be a few notes in common. If a musical copyright means that nobody else can ever use those notes, our musical heritage would be awfully limited. However, the title is wrong. Zeppelin won the first round, and "Stairway to Heaven" has been declared original so they won. The only thing left would be an appeal to the Supreme Court.

This is not the first Led Zep have been sued by songwriters. In the 1980's Anne Brandon sued them for using her song "Baby I'm Gonna Love You". Led Zep were forced to split the royalties for the song and give her c0-ownership. The Led Zep song "Whole Lotta Love" is so similar to Willie Dixon's 1962 song "You Need Love" Dixon sued them in 1985 and ending getting an out of court settlement and a co-writing credit. Led Zep also plagiarized the song Dazed and Confused. Singer-songwriter Jake Holmes wrote the original version in 1967. Although the lyrics have been changed the title and music are the same. In 2010, Holmes sued and won a co-credit and an out of court settlement. There are at least a half a dozen other times Lez Zep have broken copyright laws. It seems to me that Led Zep stole a lot of music from other groups. Salisbury I like the way you included a link LedZeppelin's 10 Boldest Rip=Offs. Your username makes me keep thinking of one of my favorite Peter Gabriel songs "On Salisbury Hill"

Guitar solo stolen, big time. Rest of the song, original.
