Hello, prince's idea of rainbow children is quite different than the links provided, (meaning children that had never lived on the earth etc.) Prince was writing of noah and has family after they left the ark and rebuilt the earth after the flood. The rainbow was a sign of a covenant between god and men that he would never ruin the earth again with such a catastrophic flood, thus the rainbow children.

After seeing the Rainbow appear along with the title of the Album I was wondering.

Of course I googled Rainbow Children. Those were a few of the links that came up.

I can see it making sense either way.

The Voice on many of the Rainbow Albums songs is a bit strange to me. Don't get me wrong I like the songs but the voice might take some getting used to.

I'm just loving the fact that the Rainbow appeared at Paisley Park

I'm still in the midst of listening. So far 1+1+1 Is 3 is my favorite. It's the most like Prince. I think other songs will grow on me, though.

Just excited to be listening to something new....though I could always listen to Cream for the 1000 time in 3 days.

The Rainbow Children

Storyline
"The album opens with narrative in a distorted low voice by Prince that continues through many of the album's tracks. It introduces the story of the "Rainbow Children", who "go about the work of building a new nation" with "accurate understanding of God and his laws". "The Wise One" and his woman are tempted by "The Resistor" "as prophesied". The woman succumbed, and was banished from the land along with five others, who became "The Banished Ones" (this could be interpreted as being written about Prince's separation from his first wife Mayte, but this has not been confirmed).
The Wise One trusted in God to bring him another woman (this could be interpreted as Prince's second wife, Manuela Testolini). The term "Rainbow Children" seems to indicate a group of people who have obtained some kind of spiritual enlightenment, "flying on the wings of the New Translation" (likely referring to the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures used by Jehovah's Witnesses, the religious groupPrince belonged to at the time of recording).
The Banished Ones take over the world, except for the palace of the Rainbow Children, which they surround with a "digital garden"; they try to remove The Wise One (king of the Rainbow Children) from power. The Wise One eventually "obliged with an invisible deed", and The Banished Ones return to the place they were born, "Menda City" (a play on words of "mendacity").
The Rainbow Children are then "willing to go door-to-door in search of those willing to do the work" of dismantling the digital garden. The Wise One then seduces "The Muse" who is sent to be his wife, bringing her into "the sensual everafter", implanting in her a "seed of knowledge", asking her to repeat "1 plus 1 plus 1 is 3". The Banished Ones are chased away by the Rainbow Children, who deconstruct the digital garden. "The haze was finally broken" following the removal of the garden, and people understood that nobody else would "be able to lay claim to the treasures of the Rainbow Children". The Muse awoke, "this time as a queen", leading to a wedding between The Wise One and the Muse.
The narrative ends in The Everlasting Now, with the narrator stating "from this day forward 'til times indefinite, those who love Christ are the ones who benefit. All the players' ice melted into one platinum chain and in a downward spiral it dripped down the drain."

– I remember hearing this a long time ago – now, the impossible to find CD is $$$ and MP3 is not available on iTunes, amazon, download etc…

It is a wonderful album, a story book, an amazing jazz / funk album that really showcases Prince’s musical range.

I think Prince’s synthesized low voice-over kind of reminds me of George Clinton’s naturally very low talking narrative voice. -A nod to P-Funk perhaps.

The song ‘Prelude’ on Parliament’s Tear the Roof Off comes to mind.

I have almost been in denial about this - I simply couldn't believe the news when it came through nearly a week ago.

I was lucky enough to see Prince perform live five times in total. I have seen many artists over the years but his were without doubt the most accomplished, spectacular and mesmerising live performances I have ever seen.

This thread is a thing of beauty - so many clips I had never seen before. It is a real treasure chest, so my heartfelt thanks to all who have posted clips.

I am working my way through them but am torn between loving them but also finding that they keep reminding me what a huge loss this is and making me sad. His live performances were so full of life - it doesn't seem possible that he really is gone. So viewing them truly is bittersweet.

RIP Beautiful One. Thank you for sharing your genius with us - you really were unique.
