Subject: Request for Guidance on Investigating John Gerard Schaefer Case
serial-killer-cop-florida-victims-gerard-schaefer-1625865125846.webp

We are a dedicated group of criminologists currently pursuing our degrees in various fields of criminal justice while working with the Institute for Cold Case Investigations in Florida. At this time, we are focusing our efforts on the suspected serial killer, John Gerard Schaefer, and we are seeking guidance to advance our investigation. To facilitate our work, we plan to create multiple discussion threads within this forum, with each member exploring a specific aspect of Schaefer’s life.

Our areas of focus include his early childhood, middle school experiences, parental history, high school years, overseas activities, and other relevant facets that we believe warrant thorough examination. Our goal is not only to identify his known victims but also to uncover potential additional victims and give names to those who are listed as MISSING PERSONS, as we suspect there may be more individuals affected by his actions.

We have compiled a list of persons who may be linked to this case, including Leigh Farrell Bonadies, Carmen Hallock, Peggy Rahn, Wendy Stevenson, Mary Alice Briscolina, Nancy Leichner, Pamela Ann Nater, Pat D. Wilson, Sally Seven, Barbara Wilcox, Colette Goodenough, and Susan Place, among others. We have eliminated a few names from consideration that are associated with other suspects, but we currently possess personal trophies for at least 13 individuals whose identities we cannot confirm. Conversations with the prosecutor and other involved parties suggest that the total number of victims may range from 34 to over 100.

We feel fortunate to be situated in the area where Schaefer was apprehended, as well as where he worked as a deputy sheriff. This proximity provides us access to individuals who were involved in the case and pertinent evidence, which we believe could be invaluable to our investigation. We would greatly appreciate any suggestions, resources, or insights that you could share to assist us in moving this case forward.

We will also be posting individual threads as we delve deeper into various aspects of the investigation, which may overlap with multiple areas of interest. Thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to your guidance and support.

Sincerely,
All of us at the Institute for Cold Case Investigations

Search engine results seem to indicate his first name is Gerard, second name John -- no?

Were his 300 pages of writings that were found get published in his book/books?
The out of print book is called Killer Fiction, but there is no way to confirm if some, any, or all of the writings found by LE are in the book. I will comment more after I dig the book out.

Gerard J. Schaefer was raised Catholic. Sondra London (who is worth talking to if you haven’t), dated him in high school. He was her first love, but he told her he had one girlfriend before her who could only become aroused via violence. He claimed he only agreed to do these things to please his first gf, not because he actually liked it. According to Sondra, he was never violent with her. He was very charming and Sondra’s entire family loved him and thought he was such a polite, nice young man. He liked hunting and fishing, and he often used his Dad’s boat.

Re: his father, Sondra witnessed a physical altercation between Gerard and his father, where Gerard assaulted his father with a golf club. Sondra pulled him off of his father. His father had called his mother something that starts with w and rhymes with lore (Ironically this is exactly how he references his victims in his stories). There was another similar circumstance where Gerard broke a barbecue sauce bottle over his father’s head giving him a concussion. This was all circa 1964-1965.

During this time he drove a green Ford station wagon. He confided in Sondra about his urge to kill when he was only 19. He also confided in his creative writing teacher Betty Owen, who referred him to the school counselor. Sondra left him after one of these confessions.

In Killer Fiction he describes, in detail, many murders. He is presumably not an idiot and I’m sure he didn’t tell true stories. However, after reading the book I am convinced he wasn’t just lying about killing more than the couple he was convicted of killing. It’s likely these stories could be sprinkled with bits of truth, with the locations, descriptions of victims/names changed. The main pattern that stuck out to me was his arousal from the thought that the women would never be found.

He mentions multiple times that he used boats to get rid of victims, describing them as “gator bait”. “No body, no crime.” Is what he’d told Sondra London. In one of his stories, he describes getting rid of a victim in a body of water with blue crabs, and how the crabs will eat away until nothing is left. He mentions scuba gear and going back to look at the decimation of the remains under water. He is grossly obsessive about the human body. He describes shooting, hanging, and gutting victims and often references feeding them to wildlife in bodies of water. He also mentioned victims that traveled down to Florida on vacation from other states.

There is another criminal, who may still be alive and imprisoned in Florida named Kenneth “Mad Dog” McKenna, an alleged “white slaver”. Schaefer interviewed him for magazines at least twice. This is worth noting since IIRC, one or both of the women who escaped said Schaefer had mentioned selling them.
Here is a link to the sick articles and other information about McKenna: Kenneth 'Mad Dog' Mckenna | Programmed To Kill

Interestingly there is a comment on this page by Schaefer’s high school gf Sondra London from 4 months ago:

A GJ Schaefer production. McKenna=lowly CHOMO. Schaefer wrote ALL of this crap; the Toole stuff too. Partly to intimidate me, partly to make money. I was able to verify McKenna=pariah of low estate with the Classification Officer in charge at FSP. You can safely ignore all this stuff. It's SCHAEFER getting off on jerking people around. Guaranteed.
Sondra London 4 months ago“

A quick search re: McKenna, who might be imprisoned and available to talk to at M.i. Florida correctional facility:

If there is anything specifically you’d like for me to check in Killer Fiction (if you don’t have a copy), feel free to shoot me a message. Hope this helps.

I'm reading it now and watching for clues

Has anyone found anything at all on Sally Seven mentioned above? I can't find anything about that one.

Subject: Request for Information Regarding John Gerard Schaefer’s Residency and Interactions

I am writing to you in my capacity as a criminalist conducting research on the life and activities of John Gerard Schaefer. As part of this investigation, we are seeking to speak with individuals who may have had contact with Schaefer during various stages of his life. Our objective is to gather additional details regarding his whereabouts, interactions, and any potential victims or witnesses who may have relevant information.

To provide some background, Schaefer was born in Neenah, Wisconsin, and later moved with his family to Nashville, Tennessee, and Atlanta, Georgia. In 1960, the Schaefer family settled in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As an adult, Schaefer married Martha and attended Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in 1968, while renting a property on SW 22nd Street in Fort Lauderdale. During this period, they then moved and rented an apartment in Stuart, Florida.

We are also interested in speaking with anyone who may have traveled with Schaefer, particularly during his overseas trip to Africa in 1970 and his subsequent fishing trips to the Florida Keys in 1971.

Below are some known addresses associated with Schaefer during his lifetime:
  • 3790 Ashford, Dunwoody Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30319
  • 333 Martin Ave, Stuart, FL 34996
  • Possible address for Schaefer’s mother, Doris M. Schaefer: 2716 SW 34th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312
  • Florida State Prison (where Schaefer was incarcerated until his death in 1995)
If you or anyone you know had any direct or indirect interactions with Schaefer—whether as a neighbor, classmate, coworker, or acquaintance—we would greatly appreciate your assistance. Additionally, we are seeking information from anyone who may have knowledge of Schaefer’s violent actions, even if these events were never reported to law enforcement.

Your cooperation in this matter could prove invaluable to our ongoing research. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any relevant information or would be willing to speak further.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

The Treasure Coast Institute for Cold Cases
