Los Angeles schools closed due to threat

When I worked at a well known hospital in Boston in the late 70's, we had ER bomb scares all the time. So many that we became desensitized. The bomb squad showing up was typical. Nothing ever happened and we just chocked it up to bored teens or angry patients and carried on. My how things have changed.

Just looking at some headlines today it's obvious how of out control this is. Every little thing is suspicious and needs to be investigated. People should just be able to live their lives.

Right, people Should be able to live their lives. Unfortunately, there are people out there that want to kill,(have killed) or the very least cause fear and chaos.
This is the world we live in.

Threats sent to schools in South Florida, Houston

Freida Frisaro, Associated Press 7:15 a.m. EST December 17, 2015

Miami — Students in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Houston and Dallas were heading to school Thursday, hours after school officials in those cities said they received threats similar to the ones received by the Los Angeles and New York school districts earlier this week.

Meanwhile, two Indiana school districts did cancel classes after also getting threats.

The Miami-Dade County, Dallas and Houston school districts announced on their websites that “less-than-credible” threats were received by email late Wednesday evening, and that schools would be open Thursday. Officials from Broward County Public Schools in Fort Lauderdale said they also received a threat. In a tweet sent Thursday, the district announced that all schools would be open Thursday morning...

I understand that, but every time something looks like something we don't have to panic and shut down everything or call DHS. Everything is not terrorism. Someone put a backpack in his trunk! Some people went to a dam and took pictures! A man bought a lot of cell phones! A woman is buying more than a week's worth of groceries! A brown woman wanted to buy bullets!!

Like we can't just live our lives and tour dams, go to gun stores, or football games without everyone losing their minds. That's what it's come to? It's ridiculous.

It may say something that threats come rolling in during the weeks and days of finals and tests, perhaps? It is the end of the fall semester in a time of heightened awareness of threats. From what I've observed, threats and attacks do not often go together.

When there have been attacks of whatever kind, threats have not preceded them. When threats have been made, attacks have not proceeded them, as far as I know.

Real attackers are often tipped to authorities by alert acquaintances or random people who notice things that are off and make that brave call to LE.

I've been wondering how many bomb threats turned into actual bombings or shootings. Other than the Olympic bombing in 1996 (911 call 30 or so minutes prior to the blast) all I can find are hoaxes that turned out not to be bombs, and bombings that were not preceded by threats.

Did Rudolph call prior to his other bombings? Did McVeigh call?

Anyone know? I'm sure it's a difficult stat to keep track of.

I do not know about McVeigh, but I lived in Atlanta while Rudolph was active (had spent the ealier part of that day down at Centennial Olympic Park!!) and do not recall there being any warnings phoned in on either the night club bombing or abortion clinic attacks. That said, it has been almost 20 years so my memory ain't what it used to be.

Just a touch off topic:

I grew up as an Army Brat, and as an Army wife.
I grew up with terrorist attacks on/near military installations in Germany.
I remember "Yankee Go Home!!", and militants attacking.
I remember the Baader Meinhof Gang and the Red Army Faction.
I remember NEO briefings. (non-combatant evacuation operation )
I remember so much more.
All these things make me who I am and have molded how I think about terrorism, and how I think about the USA and our freedoms.

Unfortunately,(rather,Fortunately) there have been and will always be bomb threats that are hoaxes. These are terrible times, and terrible people.

Discerning what is a threat and what is not, has been proven to be difficult under certain situations, particularly, since the San Bernardino incident isn't that far away from Los Angeles, and the Timing of it, as well.

Similarly, the Planned Parenthood killings that happened in November in Colorado Springs on Centennial BLVD, well, with the bomb threat yesterday on Centennial at the Comcast building, I can certainly understand the evacuation, even though it was found to be a hoax.

So how do people treat bomb threats?
Perhaps most are hoaxes, but in this day and time, which ones do you pick and choose??

A judgement call, and hope it is all ok, I guess, if one doesn't react to it.
It IS easy to react to it, because these are scary times, Unfortunately.
Bad things DO happen.

(Snipped By Me...) "Furthermore, relatively few bomb explosions are preceded by a warning or threat to officials. Of the 1,055 bomb incidents in schools reported by ATF, only 14 were accompanied by a warning to school or other authorities."

Speaking of bomb threats, bomb, and backpack at a school:
