Louisville jury to decide case of baby decapitated during birth

FWIW my SIL's sister died because her buzzer was ignored. Wasn't chldbirth but she was in the hospital for a very routine operation. A response to her buzz for help would have saved her life easily.

It's so sad that that happens.

Yeah, the mirror was positioned so she could see-- knock it out of the way, imo. Plus, I believe she buzzed the nurses repeatedly, was ignored, and THEN she felt the baby's legs were out.

I don't like to point right at the nurses, but my mother nearly died from being ignore post-op, every nurse on that floor was fired. My step-mother actually DID die from her buzzer being ignored in the hospital. It counts, and it needs to stop.

There should have been some punitive damages. mo

But I don't believe we know that it was a mobile mirror. It could have been a wall mirror over a sink. And can you imagine the life saving measures that were going on in that room at the time? I can't seriously fault someone for not being cognizant of the placement of mirrors in the room. And just because she buzzed for the nurses "repeatedly" (and BTW, back then most nurse call lights functioned much like elevator buttons, doesn't matter how many times you push it, it rings once--now many different systems are being utilized, but as a nurse you can only be in one place at one time)doesn't mean they didn't respond to her as soon as they were possibly able. Of course the lawyers are going to characterize it as the staff having "ignored" her. They're going for huge bucks here and need to be as dramatic and inflammatory as possible to win the juries favor. We just don't know, because not enough information has been publicized about the case. However, I'm speculating that the sum of 1.4 million is indicative of the fact that the jury was not able to find fault with the manner in which this horrific incident was handled. I guess I consider the 1.4 million to be a way of acknowledging this horrible thing that happened, but recognizing that the hospital personnel managed it in the most professional, compassionate way possible. From the information available about the case on line, her lawyers should be happy that they were awarded even that much.

Just because someone sues does not mean they are just out for money.
It also does not mean they are not telling the truth or that they are using inflammatory descriptions of things that did not happen.

I have no reason not to believe this mother.

JMO

The ONLY mirror in the room when I gave birth was a mirror designed for the purpose of the mother being able to view the birth.
