Newton police are actively search for the person or people responsible for the deaths of three elderly people in the Nonantum neighborhood of the Massachusetts city, according to authorities.

The Middlesex District Attorney's Office said the three people were found dead inside a Broadway Street home at about 10:15 a.m. Sunday and that they appeared to be victims of an apparent homicide.

Police responded to the home at about 10:15 a.m. Sunday. "These were churchgoing people. The only reason they were found is because they weren't in church and somebody came to see if they were OK," neighbor Robin Dickey said.

I think someone they know - perhaps a caretaker or handyperson or child/grandchild (grandchild was my first thought).

Sources with knowledge of the investigation tell NBC10 Boston that the victims appeared to have been stabbed. Two of the victims were preparing to renew their wedding vows this morning but never showed up at the church. Investigators believe this was a random attack, the sources said.

“Residents of the Nonantum area should expect to see an increased police presence. As always, residents are asked to remain vigilant, check door and window locks and report any suspicious activity to Newton Police at 617-796-2123,”

Two of the deceased were going to renew their wedding vows in celebration of their 50th anniversary that very morning, how unspeakably sad. I wondered if the third victim was somebody who had been asked to officiate, or maybe a friend who had been the maid of honor or best man when they were first wed, but they are all described here as “residents” of the home so maybe not.

LE are investigating whether this could be related to a separate break-in:

The preliminary investigation suggests that there were signs of forced entry into the home.

Investigators from the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office and Newton Police have been actively investigating and following leads including investigating another attempted break-in at Brookside Avenue, about a half mile from the location of the death investigation.

At this time it is not known if the two incidents are connected.

Also:
The district attorney issued a strongly worded warning to area residents.
"Remain vigilant…this is the night to lock your doors and windows, even if you usually don’t," Ryan said.

The photo of the police set up outside the home on Broadway St published by the Boston Herald makes it appear as if the crime tape is set up in front of 49 Broadway St. There is a very distinctive white Dutch Colonial a few houses down in the image so if you go on Google Streetview and look at all the houses on that side of Broadway, you can find a very neat, white Cape Cod style house that has all the appearance (to me) of being the one surrounded by crime scene tape. Google Streetview has captured an image of a male resident of this house in the driveway as well.

Looking at publicly available records, it's easy to find that 49 Broadway St was last purchased in 1981 by a man who died at age 87 in 2014. He had a wife who was also listed as an owner of the home, it's not unreasonable to think that she would be in her 90s now. From the publicly posted obituary, it's easy to find the names of the adult child and spouse (in their 70s) who likely are the victims of this crime.

The few indications so far have been that this was not a targeted attack. Newton is generally considered one of the safest small cities in America and better places to raise a family, though the neighborhoods on the other side of the Mass Pike are a little less affluent.

This is all too close for my comfort. Hopefully we'll have more information, soon.

“Three of the most wonderful people – salt of the earth, lovely,” Riley said. “One of them does the flowers in our church. They’re there at church every week. The most wonderful Italian-Americans you can imagine. [Their] home is always open, hospitality, kindness, faith-centered – beautiful tomato garden out back. [They] would give you the shirt off their back.”

“Talk about bad things happening to good people – it’s awful,” the pastor added.

The Daily Mail has more about the victims: Couple and the wife's mother are murdered in their Massachusetts home

The victims are identified, and there is more detail about their lives.

Thanks, this matches what I discovered (including about her liturgical ministry) but I didn't want to name them until MSM did.

In the article posted above you can see the same StreetView image I referenced - with likely the male (eventual) victim in the image in the driveway (though of course this image could have been taken even years prior). Rather eerie to see a resident just living their every day life now that we know what happened.

I found this quote by the parish priest interesting:

"Their 50th anniversary was to be celebrated in a blessing after communion at the 10 a.m. Mass. When they didn't show up – I can't go into the details about who discovered them – but we became notified, and myself and a number of the staff spent the day there," said the Rev. Dan Riley of Our Lady Help of Christians.
