Rintala’s first two trials, in 2013 and 2014, ended in hung juries and she was released on $150,000 bail in March 2014. At the third trial, in October 2016, Rintala was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

That conviction was overturned last September when the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that certain testimony was prejudicial and should not have been allowed.

So glad to see you start a thread for this one, @Gardenista . I was just lying in wait for someone to do it, since I was quite sure I'd mess it up.

I can't believe this has taken 4 trials.... This is gonna be a good one, IMO. Pouring paint over yourself and the victim to mess up the forensics is next level. I wonder if they had the paint already, or she bought it that afternoon after the victim was dead.

'Sounds like an interesting trial!

I stumbled upon this article regarding one of the previous trials (2016) and a couple of things caught my attention.

At one point in the interview, Whitney asked a distraught Rintala to venture her own theory about her wife’s demise.

“If I had to guess,” she said, “I would think she tripped down the stairs.”
“That really doesn’t make sense, though, that she would fall down the stairs and she ends up where she is,” Whitney said.
“It’s starting to feel like I’m getting a finger pointed at me,” Rintala said. “I just want some support. I’ve gone through a lot today. I’ll do anything you ask.”


And...

At the end of their interview that night, Whitney asked Rintala whether she had any injuries, and she replied she did not.
After showing the detective her stomach and back, Cara took a step back, away from the camera and partially hiked down her pants.
Though it wasn’t visible to the camera, Cara saw something on her legs that immediately alarmed her.
“Blood,” she cried to Whitney. “That’s all blood.”

They called the police on each other so often, plus things got messy with divorce papers, I have trouble keeping track of the timeline.

Prosecution opening. I needed the narrative just to get this plot figured out.

So, she pushes Annamarie down the basement stairs, takes advantage of her weakened condition and strangles her; cleans up the scene; then she takes the baby and goes out shopping, to a lot of places, but buying practically nothing; all the while, dumping rag evidence; after a few hours, returns, takes the baby to the neighbors and asks the neighbor to call 911; quick as a wink, she goes to her basement, pours 5 gallons of paint all over Annamarie and the scene, than sits on the floor, and rolls the rigor-ed body on top of herself, blood, paint, and all. She is thus arranged when LE shows up.

I don't see how CR got out of this once, let alone 3 times.

She was in total rigor, though, so LE didn't change her body position at all before LE took this photo. They did, however, have to get CR out from under the body (though CR got herself under AM without any help).

This prosecutor drones on and on, too. You'd think they'd put on a better prosecutor for a case that's been tried 4 times, and the state as ALOT of circumstantial evidence.

Authorities say was strangled to death in the Massachusetts home the married couple shared. The slain woman was found at the bottom of their basement staircase, bloody and beaten, cold to the touch, and covered in paint.

Two deliberating jurors and one alternate were dismissed this morning after lengthy questioning in Judge’s chambers. Jury was reformed with the two remaining alternates and sent home for the day. They will start from scratch tomorrow.

The jury deliberated, 6 hours and 42 minutes today and then went home without a verdict. Back tomorrow at 9 AM.

Deliberations have been going for 12.5 hours in the #CaraRintala trial. The original 12 jurors deliberated 16.5 hours before 2 jurors were dismissed for personal reasons. 2 alternates were placed on the jury and the new 12 have been deliberating 12.5 hours. This is Rintala's FOURTH trial. 2 hung juries, 1 conviction that was overturned and new trial ordered.

After 13.5 hours of deliberations the #CaraRintala jury goes home without a verdict. They return tomorrow at 9am.
