If you have a better idea as to why a prominent lawyer would want to defend someone who clearly has no money, I am all ears.

I just don't see the trial getting much national coverage. The high-profile trials in the last 5 years have been the Boston Bomber, Aaron Rodriguez, Oscar Pisitrious, George Zimmerman, Casey Anthony, Jodi Arias. It just doesn't fit. The defendants in this case are too unattractive and too poor. The mystery is over, and the circumstances are now very ordinary. It makes more sense to me that perhaps he is just helping out for the first few hearings, and then a public defender will take over. Maybe he only cares about Boston prominence but I don't see how anyone can look at the circumstances of the case and say "Yes, there will definitely be wall-to-wall coverage of this case when it goes to trial in 2016/2017/2018."

We are discussing this particular case as oppose to all these other cases, are we not? Little girls composite was plastered all over news and internet and millions of people looked at it.

Yes, we are discussing this case because Bella was unidentified until a day or two ago. Now, we are getting information about what happened to her. In a week, the information train is going to stop and the case is going to fade out of the news. The circumstances of the case have changed dramatically. The national media always has a new case of the week.

I found an older FB page of Rachelle Bond. Her only friend was also her friend on her now deleted page. Wish more was open, it seems to go back years.

I don't see anything on there at all. Are you able to see anything?

A quote from AA cited in this article:

“The only thing that has me is the next-door neighbors,” Amoroso said. “Shame on anybody that lived in that building that didn’t start asking questions and saying just maybe — just maybe — that’s her.”

Really??? Coming from the guy who knew the truth but failed to contact the police. All MOO.

That quote makes me so angry. He's trying to blame neighbors for not stepping up. Riiight.

Again, what would be the reason for a prominent lawyer to defend a guy who clearly has no money? Publicity is the only thing I can think of.

Yea, I don't think he sees the irony here. The father who was absent from his child's life blames the neighbors for not contacting police.

Okay, I guess this case is going to be in the national media every day until the trial, and then the trial will be big as OJ.

Again, why is he doing it? Why would a prominent lawyer defend someone with no $$$$$? If you have a better idea, let us know, please.

Why is he doing it? What does he need publicity for? He must be well into retirement age.

He seems to like social justice, but I don't see anything here that tugs at your heart strings re MM. The crime is super heinous because of the refrigeration,

I don't see anything where a humanitarian would have the desire to step in,

-He believes it will be a high-profile trial in Boston, and that's good enough for him
-He is planning on offering his assistance during the first couple of hearings, and then a public defender will take over

He may have signed on for publicity, but that doesn't mean the trial is guaranteed to bring him national prominence. Obviously, the case isn't obscure and it is high-profile at this point in time. Personally, I don't see how it stays in the news, nor do I think the trial will be big news outside of Boston, but he may think there is a possibility it could be (a bigger possibility than exists in almost every other child murder case pending for trial).

ETA: But if attorneys are latching onto to cases because they *might* be high-profile trials, you have to wonder why Justin Ross Harris has public defenders.

An older person can enjoy publicity as much as a young one.

I never said it has to be national publicity. But who is to say this case won't receive national publicity? Jose Baez got quite a bit of publicity over somewhat similar case (involving an allegedly murdered child). I will chalk up Justin Ross Harris case to the mysteries of the universe.

I don't see the cases as that similiar, but a big difference is that the Anthony case managed to get a lot more media coverage pre-trial than the Bond/McCarthy case likely will. Caylee was missing for longer than Bella was unidentified, and in Florida, you had the Sunshine Laws, which provided a regular stream of information. There was something new happening in that case on a regula basis for a very, very long time after Caylee was first reported missing. In Bella's case, we went long periods of time w/ nothing new in the media. Wasn't the Anthony case on Nancy Grace every day for like six months? Anyone could have predicted that HLN was going to cover that trial gavel-to-gavel back in '08/'09, but I don't see how anyone can confidently say that here.

Well, the lawyer clearly is doing it for something other than $$$, because from what has been reported, MM hasn't got any $$$.

How Could the State Not Know ‘Baby Doe’?

--snip--

Suffolk County District Attorney says McCarthy murdered Bella “intentionally” and “by an act of violence,” but so far no details of that violent act have been released. Connolly says more details may be revealed at McCarthy’s arraignment on Monday.

For now, even McCarthy’s attorney Jonathan Shapiro is unaware of the specific allegations against his client.

But, with what appears to be a lack of physical evidence, Shapiro wonders if Bella’s case may play out like another famous trial involving a dead toddler—one where the mother got off.

“This could be like the Caylee Anthony case,” he told The Daily Beast.
