Jail is like the overnight lockup/drunk tank kind of thing in a police station.

Prison is the same as it is in the UK.

I think it might be a little more complicated than that and I've over-simplified, but prison is the more serious place compared to jail.

I think a local jail might also be used for stays of weeks or months for more minor infringements/crimes like 2 weeks in jail for minor driving offences?

I've never heard that phrase for police station holding cells? And I am in the UK lol

I don't think we really use the term 'jail' in an official context? I think we just borrow the term from the US and use it as a slang for prison? Unless it's used in an official way in Scotland...I'm only familiar (on a general knowledge level) with English legal terminology.
