Borderland State Park was once the Poquanticut Cedar Swamp. The wetlands contain floating islands of vegetation. It's a quaking bog. Imagine what it would be like to be unable to get out of the swamp for several days. Eek.

Did this woman think she could walk across the swamp? In spite of the description of a quaking bog, apparently you can't walk across the Poquaniticut Swamp. I hope she recovers soon, she's very lucky she was able to eventually get someone to hear her.

Reading so many of these incidents makes me realize, when out hiking, its always best to follow directions and stay on the trail.

ET apparently found walking in the woods therapeutic and did so often. Frequent visitors to Borderlands State Park might not recognize dangerous conditions at certain times because it's some place they are familiar with. We have had a LOT of rain over the last month. Given what's underfoot in former swampland, frequent visitors might encounter unexpected hazards and realize too late they are in difficulty.

Locally (southern New Hampshire) the body of a man missing since last year was recently recovered from a swamp. An older man with dementia went to the store and, at some point, left the pavement. First responders searched the area extensively all summer and then again in early spring. A drone operator finally located the remains not too far from the man's last known location. Even with the coordinates provided by the drone, first responders had a tough time locating the body and an even more difficult time bringing the remains out of the swamp. Rescuers realized they'd come within feet of the remains during some of the searches.

That's the nature of swamps. People lose their sense of direction. Hazards are submersed under water. It is difficult for experienced rescuers to get where they are trying to go. Thankfully, here, the lost person was rescued after several days stuck in a swamp. She's gone through quite an ordeal.

“I’d like to commend our Easton officers, who blindly jumped into the water and followed the woman’s calls for help,” Easton Police Chief Keith Boone said in the news release. “Their immediate action resulted in saving Emma Tetewsky. We’d also like to thank our incredible Fire Department, Borderland State Park rangers, and the hikers who heard Emma and called 911. Without this coordinated effort, this rescue would not have been successful.”

Barbara Zinaman, Tetewsky’s mother, told the Globe that her daughter is dehydrated, malnourished, and sunburned.

“She’s being nursed back to health,” Zinaman told the paper. “She’s a strong woman … She looked better than I thought.”
